By United Press International More than 100 families Monday night were evacuated from several southwestern Oregon communities when heavy rains sent rivers and smaller streams pouring over their banks. Drenching rains also pounded portions of*Oklahoma and Texas. The edge of an unusual Atlantic Ocean storm continued to batter the southern Atlantic Seaboard with high tides and gale force winds. For the third straight day Sunday Midwestern communities received balmy weather and record high temperatures. Families at Rogue River, Eagle Point and Shady Cover, . Brazil Dance May Be New Favorite By WILLIAM D. Laffler United Press International NEW YORK UPD — A dance rhythm from Brazil known as the bossa nova may become the nation’s biggest ballroom favorite since the early days of the twist. It is not likely to replace the twist hully-gully and other such tempos where teen-agers gather, but it certainly will appeal to dancers who look with disfavor upon gymnastics. Paul B. Winter’s sextet recently played the bossa nova at a private White House concert and the first lady was reported to have been elated about the new rhythm. The bossa nova is a mixture of the samba and modem American jazz. Unlike the often cacophonic music of the twist, the sound of bossa nova appeals to the ear as well as the feet. Not New Dance The bossa nova is not a new dance in America. It first was heard in the United States about three years ago and was quite popular until the end of 1960. Then it was forgotten until Sidney Frey, owner of a record company, heard it in Brazil and decided to revive it. Now dozens of recordings are on the market and no end to production of albums is in sight. The bossa nova, which means “new flair” in Portuguese, the language of Brazil, was invented by a group of young Brazilians who were experimenting with new rhythms and harmonies. It caught the fancy of the elder Brazilians and soon enjoyed national popularity. Bossa nova has no royalty, yet. Benny Goodman was hailed in his time as the king of swing, Elvis Presley became the prince of rock ‘n’ roll and Chubby Checker was the high priest of the twist cult. However, Joao Gilberto, a Brazilian composer and singer, is regarded as the “father of bossa nova” because he made it popular. Gilberto was present when Sid Frey and Show magazine sponsored the first public bossa nova concert —at Carnegie Hall in New York on Nov. 21. Audience Caught Beat The audience did not react favorably at the beginning of the concert but within a short time it caught the rhythm of the new beat and. at the end of the evening gave Gilberto aii ovation. Kathryn Murray, of the dancing schools, who with husband Arthur has seen many dances come and go, believes the bossa nova will be more than an overnight sensation.

“I think we have a real dance this time and not a dance craze,” she said. Over at rival Fred Astaire's dance studios, instructors are teaching the bossa nova as a cross between the samba and the mambo. “The dance is still in the beginning stage,” a spokesman for Astaire said. “Everyone is making up their own steps by the hundreds. We will know in a month which steps will be accepted.”
Chinese Reds Criticized By Russian Red ROME (UPD — Soviet Communist party Secretary Frol Kozlov publicly criticized Communist China today for its “adventuristic position” in the Sino-Indian border conflict. Without mentioning the Chinese by name, Kozlov, a member of the party’s ruling Presidium, told the 10th congress of the powerful Italian Communist party in a rare open attack: “Those who are certain of their historic future, have no need to play with thermonuclear fire and endanger all the achievements of civilization.” . It was the first time such a high Soviet official had publicly attacked the Chinese Communists directly on the issue of the SinoIndian war. Attacking the Chinese party line that war with the West is inevitable, Kozlov said this is “an adventuristic position which has nothing to do with Marxism.” Delegates to the session of the Western world’s biggest Communist party broke into stormy applause. But Chinese representatives remained silent. “Peace-loving men are looking wlto“~kKir'Ttc>nuern^at"tKe”Sino : ’ Indian crisis which is “seriously harming the interests of both the brotherly Chinese people and the friendly people of India,” Kozlov said. He then expressed some satisfaction over the Chinese - proposed cease-fire. Using the Balkan outcast satellite of Albania as a strawman in the Sino-Soviet dispute, Kozlov described the Albanians as “antiLeninists” whose attacks against Moscow are a “monstrous slander.” Party leader Palmiro Togliatti opened the congress Sunday with a four-hour speech that drew only token applause from the 876 delegates and hundreds of handj picked guests. ———. • — Togliatti outlined a right-wing domestic and international policy lof peaceful coexistence, domestic reform, alliance with the middle

Dallas Backs Info Title In AFL Division By United Press International Only the Boston Patriots stood in the way of an all-Texas playoff in the American Football League today. The Dellas Cowboys backed into the Western Division championship Sunday and the Houston Oilers can sew up the Eastern berth in the playoffs—with a little luck —next Sunday. The Cowboys dropped a 23-14 verdict to the Buffalo Bills Sunday but clinched their first conference championship when Houston whipped Denver, 34-17, to eliminate the Broncos from the Western race. The Oilers’ victory also enabled Pop Ivy’s men to regain their half-game lead over the Patriots in the Eastern Division. The Pats had pulled into a first place tie by downing the New York Titans, 24-17, last Friday night. r Two Games Remaining Houston and Boston each have two games remaining. The Oilers entertain the hapless Oakland Raiders and the Patriots visit the San Diego Chargers next Sunday. A combination of a Houston victory and a Boston defeat would give the Oilers their third straight Eastern crown and a crack at their third consecutive league title. If the Patriots repeat an earlyseason victory over the Chargers they will carry their dogfight with Houston down to the final week of the season when the Oilers visit New York and Boston is at Oakland. Jack Kemp and Cookie Gil-christ*-sparked the aroused Bills to their most impressive victory of the season., .. _ Completes 21 Passes Kemp completed 21 of 35 passes for two touchdowns and 248 yards. Gilchrist, who plunged for one TD and kicked a 37-yard field goal, established a league rushing mark by gaming 63 yards on 19 carries to raise his season total to 953 yards. The old AFL record of 948 yards was set by Houston’s Billy Cannon last year. The Oilers set a league record by intercepting eight Denver passes and turned three of therrf into touchdowns in the mud at Houston. Another league record fell when both teams totaled 94 passes. George Blanda tossed three touchdown strikes, including a pair to Cannon, booted two field goals and added four conversions. In Sunday’s other game, the Chargers broke a six-game losing streak by turning back the Raiders, 31-21, with the help of two early touchdowns by newlyacquired fullback Rerry McDougall at San Diego. It was the Raiders’ 18th straight loss.

Nehru Says Some Troops Withdraw
NEW DELHI (UPD — Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru reported today that the Chinese Communists appear to be withdrawing troops from rear areas but are holding fast to front line positions in India’s North East Frontier Agency. Nehru admitted, however, that the situation is “confusing ’ and he did not go so far as to ascuse Peking of going back op its word. Peking Radio announced Sunday that its forces on the eastern sector of the border had withdrawn Saturday in accordance with Red China’s much publicized withdrawal offer last month. It did not mention other border areas. Nehru’s report to Parliament today was the first official Indian word on the withdrawal. “Behind the Chinese front there have apparently been some withdrawals,” Nehru said. “In front positions the Chinese may have thinned out but they have not withdrawn actually.” Nehru pointed out, for example, that Peking had arranged to return 53 Indian prisoners at Bomdila on Wednesday so the Chinese Communists obviously will not have withdrawn from there by that time.

“Some withdrawals appear to be going on in some places, Nehru said. “The position is rather confused one so it is not easy for me to give any precise information. Apparently there have been some withdrawals, some signs of withdrawal? in rear areas, signs of truck withdrawals, etcetera.” Home Minister Lal Bahadur Sbastri said Sunday night it probably would be several days before there would be a clear picture -Of-the- Chinese withdrawal. He reiterated?* the government’s statements that India will not negotiate with Red China if its troops fall back only to the ceasefire line established by Peking. “India’s firm in the stand that unless the Chinese withdraw to positions of last September 8 we will not talk,’’ he said. US. Ambassador John Kenneth Galbraith flew north today to the headquarters base at Tezpur for an on the spot inspection of Indian fighting forces. Galbraith planned to spend the day iat the Assam Plains town , talking to military men in charge of Indra’s NEFA defenses. This is expected to help Galbraith keep a Washington informed of India’s military needs.
