MONROE WCTU HAS MEETING The Monroe WCTU met at the home of Mrs. Winteregg, recently, lhe group sang, “Deeper Is the Love of Jesus," and the devotions were given by Mrs. Ferdinand Martz, with prayer by Mrs. Claude McAlister. The treasurer's report was given by Mrs. John Gage. Mrs. Jack Mcßride, president, conducted the business meeting. A vocal duet, entitled, "Farther Along,” was sung by Mrs. Ferdinand Martz and Mrs. Homer Winteregg. it was voted to have a Christmas gift exchange at the December meeting. The lesson, ta’ten from the study book, "Anti-liquor Sentiment" was given by Mrs. Jack Mcßride and “Wine was my Mocker,” by Mrs. Horner Winteregg. The meeting closed with the singing of "Blest be the Tie,” and dismissal prayer by Mrs. Homer Winteregg. The Merrier Monday home demonstration club will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. Lj the Palmer House, Berne. The Women’s’ Missionary Association of the Nuttman Ave. U. B. church will have a rummage sale of new and used articles Saturday at the Stuckey hatchery from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tri Kappa sorority will have a meeting in the home of Mrs. Richard Mies, Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. The Monroe Methodist W. S. C. S. will meet In the church Thursday evening, at 7:25 o’clock, for their Christmas meeting. Gifts for Neighborhood House and a 25-cent gift exchange are to be brought. The Art department of the Woman’s club will meet Monday evening at 8 o’clock in the home of Miss Mary Jo Hoffman. The D. A. V. and D. A. V. auxiliary will have a joint meeting Thursday at 8 p.m. in the D. A. V. hall. The auxiliary will be in charge of the meeting. Several state department officers will be the honored guests, commander Bob Peters, Evansville; adjutant William Garrett, Muncie; chaplain Pat Patterson, Fort Wayne; auxiliary junior vice commander Miss Nomia Schwartz; Fort Wayne, and past state commander Chester Schwartz. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. The 0.N.0. home demonstration club Christmas party will feature a 6 p.m. potluck dinner Wednesday, December 12, at the home of Mrs. Don Jeffrey. Mrs. Wally Durr will be the co-hostess. The hostesses will furnish the meat, potatoes, rolls, coffee and' table service. Members are asked to bring a covered dish. The secret pal gift exchange will be later in the evening, at which time names will be revealed, and new names drawn for 1963. New members, not having a secret pal, are asked to bring a $1 gift for exchange. L The Union Chapel Ladies aid will hold t h e i r regular monthly meeting Thursday, all day, in the church basement. There will be an election of officers and a potluck at noon. 1 The Wesley Sunday school class of the Methodist church will have a dinner Sunday at 12 noon at the parsonage. Each member is to bring his own table service and a 25-cent gift exchange. The Ladies Fellowship of the Missionary church will meet Thursday evening, 6:30 o’clock at the home of Mrs. Lawrence Von Gunten. -Each member is to bring a covered dish. The St. Gerard study club will meet in the home of Mrs. Richard Des Jean Wednesday evening.

The Holy Family study club will meet in the home of Mrs. Melvin Mcßarnes, Thursday at 8 p.m. Locals Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Archbold write from Rockport, Texas, that they had a very wet trip to Rockport, but at present have sunshine and a mild temperature. Both are well, and they will remain at the Taylor Oak Trailer Court, Rockport, Texas, until Dec. 22. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Schirack celebrated their golden wedding anniversary November 27. Her sixteenth birthday was celebrated by Miss Jean Swickard Saturday. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Swickard, 215 Stratton Way. Births Lowell and Kathleen Boerger Sharp of Hartford City became the parents of a baby boy November 25. The baby weighed 7 pounds and 4 ounces. The maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Boerger of Decatur, and the paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Sharp of Hartford city. Girl Scouts Troop 506 Brownie troop 506 met Thursday afternoon in the Lincoln school. The meeting was opened with the Brownie promise and the pledge of allegiance. Officers for December were elected, president, Evelyn Tumlen; secretary, Susan Schwartz; treasurer, Donna Wendel. Dianna Boltz and Christine Fletcher will be in charge of games for December. Centerpieces for the county home were made during the meeting. Games were played, Brownie songs and Christmas carols were sung. Scribe, Darva Hirschy. • Automobile Damaged In One-Car Accident - Estimated $250 damage to a car driven by Calvin E. Hofstetter, 17, of route one, Geneva, occurred at 12:30 a. m. Saturday on highway 27 at the entrance to the Trees Drive-in 1% miles south of Berne. Hofstetter stated that he was driving along about 60 miles an hour, when the right front wheel dropped onto the berm. He whipped it back onto the road, and the car went out of control, careening across the road, off the left side, into a guard rail at the drive-in, off a tree, into a light pole, and 126 feet down the road. Hofstetter was treated for a skinned forehead and bruised knees.

(UPI) — The first Monroe County-wide recount of ballots since 1933 opened today when a commission began work checking 19,000 ballots cast Nov. 6 for prosecuting attorney. Democrat incumbent Fred Gregory asked for a recount when official returns showed he lost by 56 votes to Republican Thomas Hoadley.

Record Temperature Continues In State By United Press International Record - breaking temperatures in the 60s continued in Indiana today, and readings 10 to 15 degrees above normal were expected all week over most of the state. Highs Saturday ranged from 60 at South Bend to 65 at Evansville, and Sunday from 59 at South Bend to 64 at Evansville. Highs today will range from 58 to the low 60s, and highs Tuesday in the mid 50s all around the state. The five-day outlook indicated only minor day .to-day changes in the central and south portions, but turning cooler in the north. Nevertheless, readings will average well above normal throughout Hoosierland through Saturday. The 63-degree top at Indianaplis Saturday set a new record for Dec. 1. The old record was; 62 set in 1901 and tied in 1914. The 64-degree reading Sunday in the Hoosier capital tied the old record of 64 established in 1950 for Dec. 2, A reading of 62 today would set a new record for Dec. 3. The present record of 61 was established 'in 1873 and tied in 1891, o A little rain or drizzle may occur in the north v portion Tuesday. Elsewhere, similar moisture conditions are expected Wednesday. For the five days, precipitation will total one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch north and one-fourth to one-half inch elsewhere, largely the latter part of the week. Harry L. Hoffman Is Beina Reassigned LACKLAND AFB, Tex. — Airman Basic Harry L. Hoffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Hoffman of R.R. 2, Geneva—lnd.....is., being reassigned to Lockbourne AFB, Ohio, for training and duty as a roads and grounds specialist. Airman Hoffman, recently completed United States Air Force basic military traingin here. He is a 1962 graduate of Geneva high school. Wells Committee To Operate Office The auto license branch in Bluffton wll be administered by the Wells county Democratic central committee, with Hershel Grove serving as manager when Wiliam H. Booher, auditor-elect resigns to take office. The new plan is expected to net about $2,000 a year to the Wells county Democratic central committee, which will also hire two fulltime and one part-time clerk for the job. There were four applications for the job: sheriff Raymond Durr, who leaves office Dec. 31; J. A. Stoner, Nottingham precinct committeeman; Robert Metier, Bluffon precinct committeeman; Henry Troutner, Bluffton precinct committeeman. ■■

State Road Toll Is Low Over Weekend By United Press International No traffic fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours of the weekend as Indiana recorded four deaths over the | J54-hour period. Everett Hisgen, 72, Bed’ord, was the last fatality. He drowned Saturday night when his car overturned in a creek south of the Sullivan County town of Hymera. His death pushed the 1962 Indiana toll to 1,113 compared with 970 persons killed in traffic accidents this time last year. Louis Taylor, 29, Hammond, was killed early Saturday when his car crashed into a sign post along the Tri-City Expressway in Hammond. »Robert Nannenga, 60, Demotte, was injured fatally in a heiadon collision of two cars west of Demotte Friday night, while trying to make a turn. Skating Party Held By Cubs, Families More than 150 Cub Scouts, parents, brothers and sistors o f the Cubs gathered at the Happy Hours skating rink Friday night for the pack’s nre-Christmas skating partv. The rink was jammed with eager boys and girls and boosters of Cub Pack 3061 bent on having an evening of fun and fellowshio. The party started at 7 and continued until 10, with all of the Cubs and their families skating, talking playing games and having a good time in general. A lot of the boys had never been on skates before. It was also interesting to witness many of the parents in the process of learning the art of skating, also. A short meeting was held in the rink. Two of the Cubs were honor guards for the flag, as the-, pledge of allegiance was repeated by the group and led by the pack’s cubmaster, Judge Myles F. Parrish. Kenneth Erhart, chairman of the pack, gave a short talk in wh ch he thanked the group for its splendid cooperation, and announced that three new Cubs were admitted to the pack as of Friday night. The new Cubs are Dean Bodie, Mich -ael Manley and Phillip Morgan. The pack now has 18 new members since the “Go Round-Up’’ started.
