Ginsberg, state mental health commissioner, reported today that 68 Adams county residents were under treatment and care in state mental hospitals on June 30, 1962. Also during the last fiscal year, 12 Adams county people were admitted, and 6 were discharged. Dr. Ginsberg’s report showed that of the 68 remaining: 3 are in Beatty hospital, 2 in Carter hospital, 13 in Fort Wayne school, 8 in New Castle hospital, 1 in Northern Indiana Children’s Hospital, 41 in Richmond hospital. State wide, 31,416 persons, one out of 150 Hoosiers, receive some kind of care and treatment for mental illness in state hospitals, schoools for the mentally retarded, and community clinics. Dr. Ginsberg said the report, which had taken some months to compile, was made available as quickly as possible after its completion so that the public and the members of the Indiana general assembly could be aware of its importance in the forthcoming legislative deliberations! The state’s mental health program, although a professional career service, must compete for attention against such major problems as reapportionment, taxes, highway construction and public education programs. Dec. 6, one week from tomorrow, in which to file their expense statements.
