George Washington Collects Garbage V By MERRIMAN SMITH t’PI Whit* Honsp Reporter WASHINGTON (UPI) — Backstairs at the White House: Know who collects President Kennedy’s garbage and trash at Hyannis Port? George Washington, that’s who. George Washington Rubbish Collection Service is a Hyannis Port institution. George, the founder (of the trash pickup, not the country), no longer runs the business which is in charge of his son-in-law, George Tobey. It may be announced any minute, but the Democrats were so pleased with their banquetless fund-raising affair in New York last May that they plan another one in Washington Jan. 18. It will be a mammoth entertainment gala at the District of Columbia Armory with most of the seats priced at SIOO. Tbe show in Madison Square Garden last May saluted the President’s 45th birthday and was more successful as a money raiser than the conventional SIOO-a---plate dinner. If the Washington affair is another success, this could spread to other large cities where at conventional fund-raising dinners, much of the money goes into » food, wine and service. / This week’s knee-siapper around the White House and other outposts of the New Frontier: “Knock, knock.” “Who’s there?” “Nixon.” “Nixon who?” “You’ve forgotten already?” Mrs. Kennedy is taking extra special care of her new puppy, Clipper, a five-months-old German Sheperd male. In the White House baggage from Cape Cod last Sunday night was a 50-pound sack of dog biscuits. Evaporation Prime Factor For Bovines By DICK WEST United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) — Anyone who thinks of the Agriculture Department as just another dull administrative agency is about 99 per cent right. But that other 1 per cent. Brother! I have here at hand a couple of recept departmental Jffess releases which deal with matters that are about as exotic as bureaucracy can get, give or take the Export-Import Bank. “Evaporation is prime factor in cow’s adjustment to hot weather, says USDA scientist.” That was the headline heralding the work of J.R. Weldy, a dairy husbandman of the Agricultural Research Service, who has been studying the perspiration traits of cattle. “Evaporation of water from the skin of cattle through sweating is the most important way these animals dissipate heat from their bodies,” Weldy reported. Cows differ-widely in their abil- ” ity to sweat, he added, and the more they perspire the better they adjust to constant high temperature. The next step in the research is to determine whether sweating is hereditary, but I strongly suspect that is only a “cover” story. I would be willing to wager that Weldy actually is trying to develop a bovine dedorant. “Genetic discovery brings hybrid wheat near reality.” That was the headline on the other release which revealed that departmental agronomists have discovered a “missing link” in grain evolution. “In order to produce hybrid wheat seed, a seedsman must first grow wheat plants with flowers that are male sterile and therefore cannot fertile themselves,” the department explained. “But before a farmer can make practical use of the hybrid seed, from male sterile plants, the seedsmen must make another cross with a plant that will restore male fertility. Otherwise, the farmers’ plant would produce no kernals.” It now appears that fertility restorer genes have been discovered. The hope is that this will make it possible for Sterileplants to restore their own fertility, and thus increase the yield. If so. we can all look forward to bigger and better crops of surplus wheat — 5 Household Scrapbook I By Roberta Lee > Coffee Table Adapt a striking coffee table fruw a picture frame. You can buy ready-made legs almost any place, and a sheet ofplate glass fills the picture space. You could use a ceramic or plastic top of your own making in place of the glass, if you wish. Shoelace Repair When the metal tip comes off a shoelace, dip the end of the lace into some colorless fingernail polish, give it a twist, and let it dry. It’ll end up stiff enough to poke through the eyelets of your shoes.
