eri generally have the final say in the selection of a new home. When women indicated their preference for attractive kitchens, builders quickly became kitchen experts. Today, kitchens are all that any woman could ask for. And now that women have indicated a desire for air conditioning, builders are offering air conditioning as an optional feature in most new homes. Many families, the American Gas Association reports, are going a step further and specifying gas central systems which combine heaitng and air conditioning on a year - round basis. One advantage of these their ability to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures in every room in the home, regardless of the weather outside. Another advantage is their economical operation and compact size which permits installation almost anywhere the homeowner prefers. When space is a factor, the unit can be installed in a closet off the kitchen or in an attached garage. The desire for air conditioned homes is based on other practical considerations as well. Women have learned that the need for heavy cleaning, laundering, ironing and dusting is cut in half. Families eat better, sleep better, feel better in air conditioned homes. Health too, is improved. And husbands like the fact that air conditioning adds to the value of their property, increases the resale price and contirbutes to the family’s well being: ARCHITECT’S ROLE DEFINED Time was when most people considered an architect indispensable for large commercial buildings but far too expensive for single - home construction. Nowadays, people are coming to realize that retaining an architect to plan their home is one of the most practical steps they can take. It’s all part of the emerging concept of long-range economy, which is also influencing people to select quality, durable materials such as ceramic tile when they are planning a new home or a major remodeling project. MORE BATHS Two out of three new homes have more than one bath. In homes of quality, the floors, walls and countertops of these bathrooms are surfaced with a durable material, such as ceramic tile, that will hold up through the years. Real tile is Waterproof, resists stains and stratches and is easily cleaned- It now comes in a wider selection of colors, shapes and patterns than every before.

A USEFUL HOME AID An automatic gas disposer is one of the most useful home appliances ever devised. It will keep the home free of garbage and trash all year long. It is attractively designed and can.be installed inside the home wherever proper venting permits. And it is completely smokeless and odorless. The “smokeless - odorless” designation is not a vague claim, the American Gas Association points out. The new gas disposers are designed to consume virtually all combustibles originating in the home — garbage, paper, rags, cartons, strings, sweepings, small pieces of wood, even heavy bones and old shoes. And they are fully automatic and smartly styled. First Sight The Douglas fir tree, America’s most prolifically used commercial lumber species, was first sighted by Captain George Vancouver, famed English explorer as he cruised along Puget Sound in 1792.

Big Family, Little Kids? Dishwasher’s Perfect Gift
Suppose that, like millions of other women, you’re a grandmother. At Christmas time it’s easy to buy bunnies and bears, books and baby buggies sos the youngsters, but what about the young marrieds? Better than baubles is a gift of extra time for all hands, and an electric dishwasher will give them that —and more. Remember when your children were little—the constant clutter of dirty dishes soaking in the sink and stacked on the counter? An automatic dish washer would have been a blessing then, wouldn’t it? It’s the same today — youngsters eat just as much, just as often, and their mothers get just as weary from the endless cleanup job. An appliance that saves hours of drudgery and helps wipe out kitchen clutter makes a perfect gift for harrassed young parents. When you shop for a gift dishwasher, look for one that suits the family and their kitchen. Today’s electric units come in a variety of types, sizes and finishes to suit any kitchen,,.whether large or small, temporary or permanent, antique or ultra-modern. In addition to built-in and freestanding models, there are portables and convertibles that need no installation and therefore can be taken along when the family moves to a new home. Both portables and convertibles are rolled to the sink and to the hot water faucet whepxfishes are to be washed, and- rolled out of the way when tfie dishwashing’s done. Buift-in dishwasher-sink combinations are space savers in limited kitchens. The new models have a greater choice of cycles, including heavyduty for pots and pans, gentle and regular washes, rinsing and drying. Hand pre-rinsing is no longer necessary, as today’s machines have an automatic rinse-and-hold cycle. This means that breakfast and lunch dishes can be stored out of sight until after dinner without having food stick stubbornly to them.

Other features include self-cleansing filter systems, dual detergent cups for two washing cycles, and containers for wetting agents that help dishes dry to a spotfree sparkle. GAS DRYER SAVES TIME Women who use automatic gas dryers save time, energy and money when compared with those who dry clothes on clothlines, according to the American Gaa Association. Statistics indicate that gas dryers save homemakers 300 hours (or 37V4 eight-hour days) each year. The energy saved each week is equivalent to the amount it would take to climb a ladder six and a half miles high. Women who carry heavy wash baskets out to the clothesline lift and haul literally tons of weight each year. Modem gas dryers eliminate this arduous chore and save precious hours in the doing. Dryer owners save dollars, too, A. G. A. reports, since they buy half as many clothes as those who do their laundry manually. Families with dryers average savings in excess of $250 annually. Items too large for hand laundering are easily accommodated in gas washer - dryer combinations. Slip covers, blankets, scatter rugs, heavy outer garments and similar items, which usually have to be sent to commercial laundries or dry cleaners, can be laundered in a gas combination for just a few pennies per item. The savings in time, energy and (money .are benefits every busy * homemaker appreciates! } BURNPROOF COUNTER Most counter surfacing materials will be permanently damaged if contacted by a hot pot or pan. This presents a problem in a small kitchen with limited counter space. The solution lies in covering the counter with burnproof ceramic tile. This versatile product is also scratchproof and comes in more than 250 colors. TILE FACTS The use of ceramic tile has more than tripled in the United States since 1947. Ceramic tile is available in more than 250 colors. A wipe with a damp clot his usually all that is needed to clean ceramic tile. Eye Stopper One ingenious housewife tired of the drab rough-sawn cedar tongue-and-grove boards on the front of the house, sprayed them white to contrast with the brown of the rest of the siding. The face lifting was an eye stopper. - It's Simple With a saw, a hammer and a chisel a person can build almost anything from lumber. No other building material is so flexible and easily cut and' shaped. POOR SOIL If you have a yard rocky or infertile soil that just won’t grow grass, the best cure is a wood deck which needs neither mowing or watering. NEW HANDBAG GLAMOUR Last year’s straw handbag can be given new glamour by painting it in bright colors with a handy aerosol self - spraying paint can. Since paint sticks better to a clean surface, vacuum the bag first to remove any dust and wipe away any oil, grease or lipstick with a cloth soaked in odorless paint thinner. If you spray the bag with a gold lacquer, it’s a good idea to finish with a coat of clear varnish for additional protection. SASH AND TRIM FIRST It’s a good idea where possible to paint the outside window sash and trim with your chosen trim paint or exterior enamel before painting the rest of the house. In this way you avoid placing the ladder against the newly painted siding.
