German Withdrawal? A. N. Spanel chairman of the board of International Latex Corporation, suggests that Nikita Khrushchev may be ready to offer a reunited Germany, if Germany, in turn, is withdrawn not from NATO, but from the Common Market. The European Common Market is sending chills down the back of good Communists everywhere. It will present a huge free market area with no trade barriers, creating, as it has in the past few years, added prosperity and more jobs, and more abundant goods of all kinds. Spanel feels that Khrushchev already feels that the Common Market is a bigger threat to Soviet World domination than is NATO. There is no doubt but European Common Market, which grew out of the Marshall Plan and NATO ideas of the United States under one of our great-' est leaders — Harry S. Truman —is a growing factor with which to reckon. The very fact that a conservative congress gave the President the power to raise or lower tariffs by groups, rather than individually, as before, thus freeing him to negotiate treaties with the ECD, indicates that thinking America is more closely united behind the ECD than any other foreign policy idea. The threat of immediate, nuclear war may be ended for the moment, but no one should feel that the actual conditions for war have changed — they have not. The underlying competition between East and West still exists. We must keep our eyes open to every bid made by the Russians, always looking for insidious possibilities of tilting the balance of power in their favor. * « ■ Editorial Writer Today _ Dick D. veloped farm crop, as shown by the attendance at last year’s institute it was decided to schedule another one at this time. Seltenright states that the men on the program are some of the best qualified to speak on this subject.. Dr. J. Clyde Underwood Maple Research Laboratory, U. S. D. A., Philadelphia, will discuss modern technique in syrup making and how to get good quality sap; H. W. Taylor, Vicksburg Chemical Co., N. J., will give the latest on
new developments with chemicals; Lynn Reynolds, Aniwa, Wis., representing one of the largest sugar maple plants in this country, will present a large display of equipment as well as giving helpful information on marketing and telling of his experience with a relatively new idea, central evaporating plants; and to complete the team, Fred Trenk, pioneer in promoting the maple syrup industry in Wisconsin and retired extension forester, will discuss tree form and its
effect m quality and quantity of sap. Maple syrup and maple sugar ar. a farm woodland product that does not begin to meet the demand, a farm crop that is not in surplus, and with new technique and modern equipment, labor is not the big problem that it was at one time. Seltenright concludes at noon there will a pancake and sausage lunch with genuine maple syrup and coffee. Tickets for the meal will be available at the door.
