Let’s Help India (The following editorial was written before the Chinece cease-fire offer, of a quite questionable nature, was made. The offer will probably not be valid* since it does not call for a withdrawal from the Ladakh area of the border. A U. S. fact-finding mission is on its way there now. It appears the Chinese fear U. S. help.) The Chinese invasion, reaching now into the plain of Assam, where American military airstrips, relics of the flights “over the hump” during World War 11, dot the fertile green plains, is no longer a mere border war. While the Chinese limited their activity to occupying the 50,000 square miles of the North East Frontier Agency and Ladakh which they have claimed, it could be called a border war. But they have far overstepped these bounds. They are now deep into India. The Indian people are Aryans, of the same racial and liguistic stock as we are. They are, in this sense, our blood brothers. The great sub-continent of India bridges the gap between our Western world and the Far Eastern, Asiatic, mongoloid world. India, still in its birth pangs, and, like we Americans, highly resentful of British paternalism and colonialism, has hesitated in siding with the West. Any student of American history can recall the anti-British feeling common in America well after the civil war, resulting from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the British government’s attitude during the civil war. But India, above all else, is a proud, independent nation. She will not kowtow to China any more than she would to Britain. If India stops the yellow flood of Chinese surging through the mountain passes of the Himalayan moun- » tains, Southeast Asia will turn West; if she does not, not only Southeast Asia, but Africa, Indonesia, and eventually the free world, may be lost. China fighting in areas of its sphere of influence is one thing; but China crossing the Himalayas, entering the Indian sub-continent, endangers the world far more than the pitful, cringing little group of Reds in Cuba. When Red China deposed the Dalai Lama, and moved into the Himalayan mountains, she had moved to the outer edges of traditional Chinese influence. She is now crossing those lines, establishing new ones. Now is the time to stop China. If India falls, it may well be too late. Let’s back the President in sending India all the aid she needs, even if we have to attach strings to pull that aid back once she is victorious to prevent its use in Kashmir against Pakistan.
