Shopping Service By Psychoanalysis By bICK WEST United Pres* International WASHINGTON (UPD—For the past few weeks I have been in sporadic communication with a breathless young woman who operates a gift counselling and shopping service in New York. Actually, I couldn’t swear that she is a breathless young woman because 1 have never met her personally. But she certainly does write young and breathlessly. In her first letter, suggesting that I might want to avail myself of her services, she wrote: “I leap to guarantee that gifts personally selected by the fabulous Diane Mitchell (that’s me!) will not only be of interest to your column’s clientele but will assure each of your devoted readers from North Carolina to Southern California of a perfect Christmas.”

Gets Octane Rating I sent that' sentence to a laboratory to determine its octane content and it proved to be 10 per cent more volatile than aviation gasoline. •* It was not Diane's literaray style that ignited my interest, however. It was her modus operand!. As far as I know, she has the only shopping service based on psychoanalysis. Her clients are supplied with a “personality check list" on which they are invited to delineate the quirks and character flaws of the person lor whom a gift is to be selected. The check list Includes such entries as “extrovert," “sensuous,” “aggressive,” "intellectual," "taciturn,” “c ud d 1 y," "placid," "snob,” "scary," "arty” and "shy."

Upon seeing that, I decided to test the fabulous Diane's psychological powers. I wrote to her and requested that she suggest a gift for a cuddly snob who is aggressively sensuous." In a few days she sent me a telegram which said: "Male or female?" Sends Second Challenge I conceded that round to Diane and composed a second challenge. I told her that the "cuddly snob” was a male and that I walso wanted a gift for a female, "a shy extrovert who is intellectually scary." I am now in receipt of her reply and here is what she recommends: For the female — "A myna bird who can recite all of the Edgar Allen Poe poems in a Texas twang."
