THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR, INDIANA
Writer Weak-Kneed Interviewing Author By DICK WEST United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) — The best book on topic A that I ever read was the classic study written by James Thurber and E. B. White under the title “Is Sex Necessary??" First published in 1929, it was widely regarded as a lampoon of the sexology literature that abounded in that period. To me, however, it was too realistic for parody. In one chapter, Thurber and White described a syndrome that so closely fitted my own experience I figured it had to be based on an actual case history. They called it “the recessive knee." Summarized briefly, the recessive knee occurs when the knee of a male is brushed, accidentally or otherwise, by the knee of a female. The male knee im+

mediately breaks contact and veers off in another direction. Male Is Suspicious
According to the Thurber-White findings, in 93 per cent of recessive knee cases the male is suspicious; in 4 per cent he is ignorant, and in 3 per cent he is tired. I was reminded of their study this wet'k when Fate (Sam Fate, a local press agent) put me in contact with the author of a new best-seller on the subject. This book, a sort of spinster’s manual, is “Sex and Single Girl,” and the author is Helen Gurley Brown, who used to be a single girl herself. To quote the publisher’s blurb, the book is “uninhibited and outspoken.” Well, sir, I used to be single myself, and adjectives like that still make me nervous. Conducted Interview “ Nevertheless, I steeled myself and went ahead with the interview, which to the best of my recollection went something like this: Q. What is the central theme of your book, Mrs. Brown? A. I take the position that the
love life of an unmarried woman ... Q. Did you enjoy the recent World Series? A. I don’t know anything about baseball. The point I am trying to make is that single girls are entitled ... Q. How about tropical fish? Do you like tropical fish? A. I don’t have any hobbies. There is no reason why a single girl should not . .. Mincemeat Sundae Ever try a hot mincemeat sundae? It’s good, and easy and quick to prepare, too. Mix the sauce the day before, then let it simmer during your dinner. The ingredients are: 1 cup mincemeat, %-cup chopped nuts, *4-cup orange juice, *4cup dark corn syrup, and V4-cup brown sugar. Mix all ingredients together until firmly pecked. Let stand overnight. Just before serving, simmer gently 10 to 15 minutes. Serve hot over vanilla ice cream, allowing one to two tablespoons for each serving. Serves six to eight persons.
