Southern Cal Rated Tops In College Ranks NEW YORK (UPI) - Southern California and Mississippi, two of only three perfect-record major college football teams in the nation, held the top two positions today in the United Press International Board of Coaches ratings, the Trojans gaining the No. 1 spot for the second week in a row. T -e With only two weeks remaining before the crowning of the national champion, a slip at this point in the race could very well mean down and out. Alabama, the defending national champion which was second a week ago, already has bowing to Georgia Tech, 7-6, last Saturday for its first loss of the season and slipping all the way to sixth.

Mississippi, like Southern California unbeaten and untied through eight games, was designbted No. 1 by eight coaches buP received enough solid support ’ for second and third places to make it a race with the Trojans. Close Behind Wisconsin, Southern California’s New Year’s Day opponent in the Rose Bowl, trails in third, but not by much- The Badgers (7-1) were named No. 1 by five coaches while one coach picked Penn State for the top spot. With points distributed on a basis of 10-9-8-7*6-5-4-3-2-1 for votes from first through 10th, Southern California had 323, Mississippi had 284 and Wisconsin had 270. The big test comes this Saturday for both Southern California and Wisconsin while Mississippi, which gained the inside track to the Sugar Bowl by beating Tennessee, 19-6, last Saturday, enjoys a day off. The Trojans take on arch-rival UCLA in the 32nd renewal of their crosstown (Los Angeles) series while Wisconsin plays host to Minnesota, ranked fifth this week behind Texas. The Longhorns, too, have a tough opponent in Texas A&M on Thanksgiving Day. A victory or
tie, though, would wrap up the Southwest Conference title for Texas and give it the automatic berth in the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns (8-0-1) drew 244 points for fourth while Minnesota (8-1-1) had 171 for fifth. Alabama Idle Alabama also will be idle this Saturday and winds up its season on Dec. 1 against Auburn. On that same day Mississippi plays Mississippi State, while Southern California, shooting for its first perfect-record season in 30 years, tangles with Notre Dame. Arkansas (8-1) was seventh this week, Louisiana State (7-1-1) was eighth, Penn State (8-1) was ninth and Oklahoma (6-2) was 10th. Penn State and Oklahoma moved into the top 10 for the first time this season, gaining their positions at the expense of Northwestern and Missouri. Northwestern bowed to Michigan State, 31-7, while Missouri was beaten by Oklahoma, 13-0. In the other pairings this Saturday, Arkansas plays Texas Tech, LSU meets Tulane, Penn State tangles with Pittsburgh and Oklahoma battles Nebraska for the Big Eight lead. Decatur, Parkway Divide Twin Bill The Decatur seventh and eighth grade basketball teams split a doubleheader with Parkway in the Lincoln gym Monday, the seventh graders squeezing out a 35-34 victory, while the eighth graders were defeated, 47-29. Parkway jumped into a first quarter lead of 14-5 and held a 24-9 halftime margin in the eighth grade contest. The Decatur boys found the range in the second half, but the visitors had built up an insurmountable lead. Marbaugh’s 15 tallies led the winners, while Lon Hawkins topped Decatur’s scoring with 18 points, 16 of them coming in the second half. Jim Cass poured in 15 points leading the seventh grade to their victory. Decatur held period leads of 12-4, 16-12, and 33-14, but had to stave off a late rally by Parkway for the victory. Miller’s 16 points led the Parkway five. Notre Dame's Carroll Named Top Lineman By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International SOUTH BEND, Ind. (UPD— A hefty southernor with a yen for fried chicken whose favorite pastime Is tackling opposition ball carriers is the United Press International Midwest “Lineman of the Week.” Although he’s only a sophomore, James Samuel Carroll, an IrishEnglishman from Notre Dame, was a standout in last Saturday’s 21-7 victory over North Carolina. Despite a somewhat jammed shoulder that has bothered him since the third or fourth game of the season, Carroll managed to toss eight tackles, most of them in the second half when Notre Dame was in virtual command of the game to rack up its fourth victory against as many defeats. That gave the bone - crunching Carroll, a 215-pounder originally from Jonesboro, Ark., 44 tackles in eight games, the third highest on the Irish squad. Had Starting Spot Sure Carroll served notice as a freshman that he was made of potentially great stuff, and coach Joe Kuharich was quick to recognize his talents. Thus, when the season opener with Oklahoma approached, Carroll had the left guard starting spot clinched. He is the only soph to start all eight games. “As a starting sophomore, he

Quarterback Daryle Lamonica took a bow last week for pitching four touchdown passes against Pitt. Follows Adamson to Campus Carroll, who moved to Atlanta in 1953, followed fellow prep school alumnus Ken Adamson to the Notre Dame campus. Adamson,who also played guard, captained the Irish in 1959. In high school, Carroll accumulated 12 letters in football, track, basketball and wrestling. He was a Georgia All-Stater twice in football and state heavyweight wrestling champion, but at Nore Dame, he has concentrated on football. Southern fried chicken, too, whenever he can get it. He also IFxes swimming as a hobby, and his favorite classroom course is mathematics. With junior Bob Lehmann at the other starting guard, the two make one of the most formidable combinations in the Midwest. Since both will be back next year, Notre Dame’s opponents might be wise to “skirt those guards.” Doug Sanders Boosts Year Golf Earnings DUNEDIN, Fla. (UPI) — Doug Sanders, seventh in the Professional Golf Association’s money winning standings, increased his earnings to $40,683 for the year when he picked uo $1,500 as sec-ond-place finisher in the Mobile Sertoma Open. Arnold Palmer leads the list with $81,4448.
