Packers Hard Pressed In Win Against Colts By NOBMAN MILLER DPI Sports Writer Neither rain, snow nor mud could prevent Don Chandler of the New York Giants from the swift completion of his placekicking rounds, but the Green Bay Packers might have missed delivering the mail if not for two of their young carriers. Chandler kicked four field goals in wretched weather conditions to keep the Giants atop the Eastern Division of the National Football League with a 19-14 come-from-behind victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Green Bay Packers played in much better weather but had all kinds of trouble before rallying to beat the Baltimore Colts, 17-13, for their 10th straight victory. They were outgained and outplayed but kept their 1962 record spotless with the help of a 103-yard kickoff return by Herb Addetley and a game-winning 23yard touchdown run by Tom Moore. Both the Packers and the Giants face an opportunity this week to break the division races wide open and set up a return meeting in the championship playoff Dec. 30. Green Bay meets the Detroit Lions, Thanksgiving Day, while New York plays the Washington Redskins next Sunday. Plenty Os Foot There was plenty of the foot in football Sunday as three of the NFL’s seven games were decided by field goals. Besides Chandler’s efforts, Lou Michaels booted a 24yarder with 13 seconds left to give the Pittsburgh Steelers a 23-21 win over Washington, and Roger Leclerc’s 12-yard kick with 31 seconds remaining enabled the Chicago Bears to edge the Dallas Cowboys, 34-33. The Lions remained two games behind the Packers in the Western Division by rallying in the last half for a 17-6 victory over the Minnesota Vikings; the San Francisco Forty Niners defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 24-17, and the Cleveland Browns drubbed the St. Louis Cardinals, 38-14. Green Bay, playing without Paul Hornung and linebacker Dan Currie, was outgained by the Colts,

380 yards to 116. Johnny Unitas* passes gained 237 yards tor the Colts and the Baltimore defense held Green Bay fullback Jim Taylor in check for the second time this season. Taylor, the league’s leading rusher, gained only 48 yards in 19 carries. Two field goals by Dick Bielskl and Unitas* 34-yard scoring pass to Jimmy Orr put the Colts ahead, 13- after three quarters. However, after a beautiful punt by Bowd Dowler, safetyman Willie Wood ran back the ensuing Baltimore kick 21 yards to the Colts* 31 and two plays later Moore raced 23 yards for the inning TD. Defense Saves Game The Packers’ defense came to their rescue twice with a pair of remarkable goal-line stands. In the second period Green Bay held the Colts off for four downs at the one-yard line, and with three minutes left in the game the Packers held firm after Baltimore had reached the two on the second down. By winning their 12th straight game dating back to last season, the Packers tied the club record set by their 1928-29 predecessors. The Giants also had trouble with the Eagles falling behind, 14- in the second period when Timmy Brown raced 61 yards for a touchdown. However, the Giants* defense held Philadelphia scoreless thereafter, and Chandler wiped out the Eagles’ lead with his field goals. The bald Giants placekidcer, who had booted a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter, added a 20-yard kick in the second period, a 37-yard go-ahead field goal in the third quarter, and a 26-yard insurance kick in the final period.

Wisconsin And Minnesota To Vie For Title - CHICAGO (UPI) — Wisconsin must beat Minnesota next Saturday to win the Big Ten football championship, but a trip to Rose Bowl already was in the bag for the Badgers. Win or lose the showdown match, the Badgers are assured of a Rose Bowl bid. The Gophers flew the Big Ten’s colors at Pasadena last New Year’s Day, and league rules do not permit the same team to make the trip twice in a row. A vote by Big Ten faculty representatives is needed to make it official for the Badgers. But officials traditionally cast their ballots for the bowl-eligible school with the best conference record. This has to be the Badgers, who now share a 5-1 league - leading record with Minnesota, and can finish no worse than second after Saturday’s concluding game. Wisconsin has an old score to settle at Pasadena where it has had nothing but trouble, losing twice in two tries against the West Coast champions. Southern California defeated the Badgers, 7-0 in 1953, and Washington bombed them 44-8 in 1960. Lou Holland, an explosive 180pound halfback, scored four touchdowns, tying a conference record held by 12 others, in pacing the Badgers to their 35-6 victory over Illinois. Minnesota, heading for a new conference defensive record, also stayed at the top with a fourth period touchdown to defeat Purdue 7-6. It came on a 29-yard pass from Duane Blaska to Ray Zitzlaff and was followed by Cot lin Versich's kick for the decisive extra point. Michigan State shattered Northwestern’s title hopes with a tremendous defensive show to earn a 31-7 victory on Wildcat soil. It was the last league game of the season for the Wildcats, who once reigned undefeated as the nation’s top team. Northwestern finished with a 4-2 conference record and the Spartans were 3-2 heading into Saturday’s finale at Illinois. In the only other conference game, lowa closed its Big Ten campaign with a 28-14 win over Michigan for a 3-3 season. The Wolverines, who have lost five of six Big Ten battles, wind up at Ohio State Saturday. Ohio State regained a bit of Big Ten prestige by beating Oregon State 26-7, and Indiana was idle over the weekend. Pro Basketball NBA RESULTS Detroit 121, New York 113. Saturday Scores (overtime).
