Geneva Cardinals, With Eight Lettermen Back, Hope For Improvement
The Cardinals of Geneva, looking to improve over their dismal record of only three wins and six-> teen losses last season, begin their 1962-63 basketball “wars" Friday evening, playing host to Montpelier at the Geneva gym. Topping last year’s record should be no problem to this band of Candinals, who could become a darkhorse contender for prep honors in the county before the season is over. Coach Harry Anderson begins his fifth season at the helm of tha southernmost Adams county School, and has eight of last season’s tourney 12 in uniform for Friday’s opener. Last season was one of those, “long" ones for the Cardinals, but. many younger boys gained valuable experience, which, coupled with some of the size that a few have added, should make the Cardinals much stronger this time around. 3 Juniors Start Anderson is expected to floor two seniors and three juniors in his starting lineup Friday, in attempting to start the season off on the right foot. Bob McCabe, who has grown up to 6-4 mark, and weighs in at 200 pounds, will be at the center position Friday, with a pair of sixfooters at forwards, Larry Webb and Bob Dull. Dull is a strong 200 pounds, whilo Webb tips the scales at a somewhat light 150 pounds. All three gained much experience last season, and with their size, could develop into a strong rebounding trio. At the backcourt posts will be. Mike Newcomer and Roger Lautzenheiser, both of whom are jun-.

The 5-10, 155 - pound Newcomer was the leading Cardinal scorer last season as only a sophomore, tallying 234 points in 17 ball games for a 13.8 average, which ranked him tenth in the county’s leading scorers. Lautzenhiser also did some fine Iscoriqg last year, and the two lads might very well develop into a tremendous scoring duo for Anderson’S Redbirds. The Cards will also have more strength on the bench this season, led by 5-10 Text Toland, 6-0 B i 11 Hawbaker, both seniors, and 5-10 junior Jerry Buckingham. All three have been working hard in pre-season practices and could crash the starting lineup at any time. These three also gained experience last season, and give Anderson eight boys with varsity experience. Anderson will have possibly three, other boys on his bench to fall back on, sophomores Bob Mosser, John Binegar and Ron Bollenbacher. Mosser stands 6-4, while Binegar is 6-2 and Bollenbacher 6-1. The Redbirds will definitely improve on their record of last season, and with a few of the “breaks” could develop into a real sound ball club. The Cardinals will be no pushover this season, and could send some good ball clubs down to defeat, but actually appear to be another year away. This could be a good season, but with three juniors starting, a fourth pushing for a regular berth, and three sophomores 6-1 or better, a year from now these Birds could take “all the money.”
