Decatur Commodores To Open Tuesday; Veterans Lacking For New Coach

A new coach and a lot of new i faces wil feature the 1962-63 editfori of the Decatur Catholic Commo-' dores, who open their basketball i season Tuesday at home, enter-1 twining Larwill. George Waning has replaced! Leon Youngpeter, who has moved to the helm of Central Catholic in Fort Wayne, and also departed are four regulars and the sixth man from last year’s team, two of whom were among the top ten scorers in the county. Gone are such stars as Steve Blythe, John and Tom Kohne, Jerry Heimann and Jerry Villagomes, a potent and powerful group. Waning thus finds an inexperienced group of boys in his first year, as only three lettermen, and only two seniors, are listed on the Commodore roster. Ed Kohne Returns The only returning regular from last year’s team, which compiled a fine 13-6 record, and bowed out in a hard fought semi-final game in the sectional, is Ed Kohne, a 5-10, 181-pound junior.

A full time starter last season, talented Ed bloomed into a top scorer and rebounder during the course of last season’s schedule. With only Kohne returning as a starter, a wide-open battle among several boys for the four remaining spots has highlighted pre-seaSon practices thus far. As of today, it appears that 6-1 Terry Myers, and 5-11 Dan Lose, will team up with Kohne in the front court for Waning’s outfit. Both have no varsity experience, but each has plenty of desire and by season’s end should develop into fine ball players. Lose is probably the best shooter on the squad, while Myers should develop into a top rebounder, and can also score. Myers is only a sophomore and Lose a junior, which points out the youth that coach Waning has, and that this team could really develop during the season. Handling of the backcourt duties will more than likely be turned over to senior Larry Hake, 5-10, 157 pourids, and Jlm_ Kaehr, 5-6, 136 pounds, also a senior. Hake and Kaehr are the only seniors on the team. Both are lettermen, although neither saw a great deal of, playing time last year. Both are quick and possess speed, but will have to come up with some outside scoring punch. Another pair of juniors, Jim McGill, 5-9, 192 pounds, and Larry Gase, 5-7, 136 pounds, will provide bench strength in the backcourt and will keep Hake and Kaehr hustling to hold onto their jobs. Neither has any varsity play under his belt, but either could move

into a regular’s berth. Rounding out the varsity squad are four other inexperienced boys, sophomores Pat Gage, Bob Mies,* Jim Schultz, and freshman John Lose. Any of the four could see varsity competition, and will also play with the Reserve team. Early Troubles A graduate of Marian College, where he played four years of varsity B-ball, before taking over as assistant coach at Fort Wayne C.C., Waning has already had his troubles before the season has even gotten underway. Junior Dick Omlor, while not a letterman, was expected to be one of the mainstays of this year’s club. A fine boy who is well respected, Waning was hoping Omlor would be the “quarterback” any team needs to be a winner. Dick, however, is under doctor’s orders to stay off the basketball court this season, and it has been a big blow to Commodore fans. Also, 6-foot senior Mike Baker has had grade troubles, and will be ineligible more than half the season. Thus, Waning will begin the season with one of the top rebounders and scorers in the county in Kohne, but will have two other boys up front who have never played varsity ball, and a pair of guards who have seen little action. The bench is also lacking experience, and there is no reserve strength for the forward and center posts. ■ 4 Hustling Bunch -— But the new coach has far from “given up the ship,” as he explains that these boys, while inexperienced, are putting forth 100 per cent and are really working hard. The team has plenty of speed, while not much size, but will run a lot and play as much man to man defense as possible. The early part of the season may be stormy, but a lot could happen as January and tourney time in February roll around. Roster: Hgt. Wgt. Yr. Hake, Larry--- 5-10 157 Sr. Kaehr.
