Heavy Turnout Os Voters Is Surprise

WASHINGTON (UPI) — Fair weather, hot local contests and i the Cuban crisis were cited today | as major factors in a surprisingly j heavy turnout of voters for TuesI day’s elections. Reports from across the nation indicated that the vote set a new record for off-year elections, surpassing by several million the 48 million ballots case in 1958. One explanation for the record turnout is that the U.S. population has grown about 10 per cent since 1958. But political leaders said population growth wasn’t the whole story. “I believe this heavy and unusual turnout by the electorate reflects a desire on the part of the people to demonstrate unity behind the President of the United States,” said New Jersey’s Democratic Gov. Richard J. Hughes. Endicott Peabody, victorious Democratic candidate for governor of Massachusetts, said that “the Cuban crisis certainly had something to do with it.” “I think the Cuban situation got people stirred up into taking a greater interest in their government,” agreed lowa’s Secretary of State Melvin Synhorst. “The Cuban situation has alerted everyone to the fact that we are lucky to be Americans and it is our responsibility to exercise our franchise to vote,” said California Democratic Chairman Eugene Wyman. Other poltical leaders attributed the turnout to a combination lof good weather, which prevailed over most of the nation, and intense interest generated by hardfought contests for state and congressional offices. In Minnesota, • Republican Rep’. Walter Judd, defeated for reelection, said the heavy balloting was “primarily a matter of organization.” He said Republicans and Democrats organized get-out-the-vote drives which “covered every single home in the district for the first time in history.” I Modern Etiquette I By Roberta Lee I Q. If my husband and I arrive late at church, when the sermon is being given, is it proper for us to walk down the aisle and be seated? A. Persons who arrive at church after the sermon has begun should seat themselves quietly at the rear of the church. To walk down the aisle at this time “is too distracting to both the minister and the congregation. Q. When hors d’oevres are served on picks, should they be eaten from the picks, or removed and eaten with the fingers? A. You should use the pick for conveying the morsel to your mouth. Q. Is it all right for a man to use only his initials when signing social correspondance, as for instance, “J. B. Harding”? A. No; he should sign his full name, or at least as, “James H. Harding.”
