Big Question Over Cost Os Kennedy House By MERRIMAN SMITH UPI White House Reporter WASHINGTON (UPI) — Backstairs at the White House: The big question at Middleburg. Va., these days: How do you build a house with 7 bedrooms, 5 fbaths, 2 dining rooms, a study, a library, a kitchen and a large butler’s pantry for $45,000? Hie White House announced the estimated construction cost at the above modest figure for a house which President and Mrs. Kennedy are building in the heart of the Virginia hunt country. Furthermore, the White House said the place was being built with union labor and would be completed in the spring. The official version of the new house represents either modesty or optimism, according to longtime residents of the area. This past weekend there was heavy rain mixed with occasional wet snow and there will be much more of the same as winter comes. Construction thus far has reached the point of a foundation outline into which a thick concrete slab will be poured in lieu of a basement. There’s a real i money saver—not having to dig a basement in the rocky terrain of Rattlesnake Mountain, the hill where the house is situated west of Middleburg. The Kennedy’s have the use of Glen Ora, the estate they’ve rented for nearly two years, until their new house is ready. Considering the weather, it could be late summer before the Rattlesnake Mountain home is ready. If it is true that the house is being constructed entirely with union labor, it must mean importation of quite a few workers. Middleburg is in a section of the ' country where the building and construction trade unions are seldom found outside of cities. What interests the people most, is the estimated building costs of $45,000. The 39 acres of land cost the Kennedy’s about $26,000. The building estimate apparently was based on the Fauquier County construction permit. It is quite customary for such construction permits to be registered at considerably below actual costs. Considering the size and equipment of the Kennedy house and the practices of other builders who make out construction permit applications with a view to later real estate and property tax assessments, the prevailing local thought is that the new Kennedy place will cost something over SIOO,OOO. It is possible that during construction the government may want certain types of security equipment included in the building and this would send the cost even higher. But should such additions be put in at government request for the protection of the President and his family. Uncle Sam would foot the bill for the extras. This was the case of the house former President and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower built at Gettysburg, Pa., after his 1952 election. A large quantity of structural steel was added at government request, plus steel reinforced concrete housing for security equipment. ** - ■ - Cleaning Cut Glass To give cut glass a high polish, wash it in hot water and then dip it in cold water in which has been dissolved a handful of starch. Let it dry partially by itself, and then polish with dry linen. A solution of one teaspoonful of turpentine to one quart of water is also effective.
