SOCIAL SECURITY QUIZ 1. Q. — How much can I earn and still receive my social security benefits? I am age 65 and still working. A.— You can draw benefits for every month only if your earnings are SI2OO or less in a year, but a worker over 65 can have fairly substantial earnings and still receive some social security benefits for the year. It depends on how much your benefit is and whether any of your dependents also qualify for benefits. 2. Q. — I am 68 years old and have become disabled. I have drawn social security benefits since age 65; now can I qualify for disability benefits? A. — No, you may qualify for monthly disability benefits only if you become disabled before age 65. At age 65, the benefits are changed to old-age retirement payments. 3. Q. — I am a woman who has worked only a short time under social security. I will be 62 years old in 1963. How many quarters credit will I need to draw benefits? A.— You will need 3 years or 12 quarters of work covered by social security. 4. Q. How much is paid to a person who becomes disabled and qualifies under the disability program? A.— The amount of the monthly disability insurance payment is the same as the amount of the oldage insurance benefit paid to a person already 65. 5. Q. — My doctor has recommended that I stop work because I have a serious heart conI dition. Should I get a report, from him to present to the social security office? A.— No, when you apply for disability insurance benefits, your ' social security office will give you a medical report form to have filled in by your doctor. 6. Q. — My son recently died. He was not married. Who can draw his social security payments. I A.— The person who paid or was

Women In Congress (EDITOR’S NOTE: This is fifth in a series of stories on the Nov. 6 election by UPI political writers. It deals with the outlook for feminine influence in the new Congress..) By VINCENT J. BURKE United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) — Twenty women, a record high, served in Congress this year. But the odds are better than even that feminine representation in the next Congress will hit an eightyear low. Even so, there may be three women in the U.S. Senate for the first time in history. The two women now in the Senate — Democrat Maurice B. Neuberger of Oregon and Republican Margaret Chase Smith of Maine — are coming back. Their terms do not expire until 1967. Only 10 of the 18 women in the House are seeking re-election, however. Seven are retiring. The eighth, Rep. Gracie Pfost, Idaho Democrat, is running for the Senate seat now held by Republican Len B. Jordan. If she wins, she will be the sixth woman in history to be elected to the Senate and the fourth to win a Senate term of more than two months. The fouryear term Mrs. Pfost is seeking in Idaho will expire at the same time as the six-year terms to which Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Neu-
responsible for his burial expenses should get in touch with the social security office promptly, A lumpsum payment may be due and an application must be made within 2 years after the worker’s death. If a parent survives who was dependent upon him for at least half support, the parent may qualify for monthly benefits. 7. Q. — I own and operate a farm in addition to my job. My wages are more than S4BOO a year. Do I pay social security tax on my farm income? A.— No, if the maximum social security tax has been deducted from your wages, you pay no S/E tax on your farm income Old Fort Coin Show Tonight And Sunday A total of 35 dealers wiH have displays of coins at the Old Fort coin show at the Fort Wayne armory, North Clinton street, Fort Wayne, until 10 p.m. tonight, and from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday, W. H. Brown and Sons, of Decatur, announced today. Admission to the show is free. Brown will be among those showing at the exhibition. Interest in coin collecting is widespread in Decatur and Adams county. Guidance Counselors Hold Meeting Here Four guidance counselors from Adams county schools held an informal meeting with Deane T. Dorwin, Decatur high school counselor Friday at the school. Wilson Cross, Geneva high school; Leonard Kingsley, Berne high school; Byron Bunker, Hartford Center principal, and John McConaha, Monmouth high principal, and Dorwin, had lunch at the Decatur school’s cafeteria and held a discussion meeting following. The five teachers and principals, who serve as guidance counselors at their respective schools, discussed students problems, testing problems, and other matters that concern their work. Further such gettogethers were planned by the . counselors, and it is hoped that r each county school can be represented at the next such meeting.
berger were elected in 1960. Seeking re-election to the House are six Democratic and four Republican women, including Rep. Frances P. Bolton, R-Ohio, dean of women in Congress. Mrs. Bolton’s 22 years of service exceeds by a few months Mrs. Smith’s combined House-Senate service. In addition to incumbents seeking re-election, 11 women won major party nominations for House seats. However, with two or three exceptions they are running in districts where their party has traditionally been the underdog. Five other women running under the banner of minor parties in New Yortc and New Jersey are given no chance of victory. In the last national election in 1960 women won two Senate and 15 House seats, equalling the pre-' vious record high of 17 women lawmakers. However, in the intervening two years three southern congressmen died and their widows were chosen in special elections to fill the vacancies. This raised to 20 the number of women in Congress. When the 88th Congress convenes on Jan. 9, there will be no women members from the South. No woman is running for Congress in the South this year. The three chosen to fill out unexpired terms are retiring. So is Rep. Iris Blitch, D-Ga.,- who has eight years’ service.
