The Big Lie Do you believe that the Democratic party is “soft” on Communism, and that the Republican party has “forced** the president into a hard line against the Red menace? If so, history indicates that you believe a big, fat lie! Since World War II the United States has vacillated between a hard and soft policy. There is enough material available to indicate which administrations were “hard”, and which “soft.” Let’s just review history. 1948— The Soviets threatened to move into” Iran, to get their warm-water port. President Truman promptly said the U-S. would move in, too .... . and the Soviets quit. 1947— Communist guerrilla warfare in Greece was countered by the Truman Doctrine, U.S. arms and aid, and military advisors, and the Reds were defeated; in Turkey, that same year, the USSR threatened action, and the U.S. promised help to Turkey, promptly ending Russian threats. 1948— When the Russians blockaded supplies to the city of Berlin, the U.S. set up an airlift, and supplied the city, and broke the backs of the Russians on this question. 1950— When Communist North Korea invaded South Korea, the United States, under President Truman and the Congress, and thousands of brave Americans who were fighting Communism, stopped the invaders, and returned to the original boundaries. All of this was under the only other postwar Democratic president, Harry S. Truman. Now, what happened under the Eisenhower administration? i 1953— Serious riots broke out in East Berlin on June 27. The United States sat idly by, the revolt collapsed. , 1956— In Poznan, Poland, a similar event, with similar results. 1956— That same year, the U.S. failed to recognize the free government of Hungary, which revolted against the Red slavemasters and for a few days had some independence, before Soviet tanks crushed the government. 1959— As the Cuba situation worsened and revolt spread, the U.S. did nothing to strengthen Democracy, or to help those interested in a free, Cuba — the U. S. sat by while the Communists perverted the revolution to their own aims. President Kennedy, with the help of a Democratic Congress, has stopped the “soft” approach, but not because of an irresponsible minority of rab-ble-rousers who want war at any time. After the the attacks on the Korean war, after the sorrow and heartbreaks that always accompany war, you would think that these leaders originally were against that war. They voted supplies for it unanimously — and this was after they had voted against military aid for South Korea which might have made the war impossible. Editorial Writer Today Dick D. Is it really improper for a bride to take an active part in her wedding rehearsal? A. This is not a matter of propriety, but rather of custom or superstition. It is customary for some good friend of the bride to take the bride’s role in the rehearsal proceedings while the bride

Emmet Hashfield Faces Death Penalty BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UPD— Monroe Circuit Judge Nat U. Hill will formally sentence Emmett O. Hashfield, 55, to death Monday for the Aug. 16, 1960, slaying of Avril (Honey) Terry, 11, daughter of a Boonville physician. A jury which deliberated a total of 65 minutes Friday night found Hashfield guilty of first - degree murder and recommended the death penalty for the ex-convict. Defense attorney Ferdinand Samper of Indianapolis immediately indicated he would appeal to the Indiana Supreme Court. Hashfield, who has spent most of his adult life either in prison or on parole for various sex offenses,- sat grimly as Hill read the verdict handed to him by jury foreman Harold Hancock. He sat upright but his face twitched as he heard the verdict. The jury received the case at 5:24 p.m. EST and announced its verdict at 9:35 p.m. but almost two hours of the time was taken up by the supper recess and the jurors waited another hour for court officials to assemble after they announced they had reached a verdict. The state had demanded the death penalty for Hashfield, and 1 ffl/l £sl PRESCRIPTIONS! . . . are our main business. Trained pharmacists will fill your doctor’s prescription promptly! Go to the firat grave in the Ohio River and go to the second grave in Boonville and write indelibly on the little tombstone that her killer suffered death.** The defense had maintained that Hashfield was innocent by reason of insanity and devoted much of its time during the six-week trial to challenging the legality of the state’s evidence.
