Use Panel Construction to Give Your Home a Lift
Easily-installed panels afford some of the most versatile and inexpensive ways of transforming either the interior or the exterior of the "tired” house, according to United States Plywood Corporation. In the course of a single weekend, an interior wall of real wood paneling, in exotic or domestic hardwood varieties, can be installed by a do-it-yourselfer with average ability and a wallet containing only $99.12, cost survey esfflnates. Other sidings simulate lap siding or clapboard effects. Time savings la installation are notable: One 48”-wide siding panel, for instance, may be nailed into place in a single operation, replacing from five to 12 narrow vertical boards. Weldwood Duraply sidings, available factory-primed, feature a maintenance-free sur- | face that holds paint upwards of five years. The resin-fiber surface of this product eliminates blistering and peeling. These sidings are available for every style of architecture, from Cape Cod and traditional colonial plans to the most striking contemporary design. The new Early
American and Ivy League cedar sidings with a natural wood finish blend equally well with landscaping on a suburban plot or in wooded exurban surroundings. Paneling lends the warmth, distinction and natural beauty of real wood to entire paneled rooms, or to areas that the homeowner wishes to spotlight—a fireplace or “feature” wall, an entrance foyer, a library-den. One wail of paneling immediately sets off a dining bay, for instance, or the “sleeping alcove” featured in so many modern apartments. Rew Walls For Old With Woodgrain Panels Remember when woodgrain paneling was found only in vacation houses and a few basement rooms? Today, home owners use it in any room of the house to create a relaxed, informal atmosphere. The most popular place is in recreation rooms, of course. There, it is an ideal background for family activities and informal entertaining. And because it is perfectly suited to rooms with a masculine decor, it also is used often in dens and libraries. Now there is a plastic-surfaced hardboard paneling that comes in six high-fidelity woodgrains. Called Marlite, it is especially popular for kitchens and bathrooms because of its resistance to heat and humidity. Yet, because of its good looks and practicality, this plastic surfaced hardboard also is used to create a distinctive decor in master bedrooms, dining rooms and living rooms. And it is effective on all four walls or in an accent area, such as around the fireplace. It can be used with almost any type furniture. In addition, it has a permanent quality that does not go out of style in a a dual-purpose area. By installing year or two. Woodgrain paneling can transform a standard living room into a dual-purpose area. By insalling it at one end of the room this area will become a relaxation area. Put the hi-fi and TV here, and keep the rest of the living room free for conversation. Home handymen can install this woodgrain paneling with out professional help. It comes in easy-

to-handle 16” x 8’ planks, which can be put up right over old walls. Concealed metal clips and wallboard adhesive assure a strong bond. Lumber dealers also carry matching woodgrain moldings so that the room will have a neat, modern look. Complete installation instructions are contained in each package. The plastic finish on Marlite woodgrain paneling is similar to that on a refrigerator. It does not need waxing after installation, and it never requires refinishing. A damp-wiping will keep it clean. A durable tempered hardboard base gives the paneling resistance against knocks and hard wear. Stains, alcohol and cigaret bums will not mar the baked melamine plastic surface. Shiny Shoes Gold or silver colored evening slippers that have become a bit shabby can be made to look as good as new by spraying them with the proper colored metallic lacquer. Be sure that the surface is free of dirt and grease, then spray on the lacquer from an aerosol can.
Your Attic—lnsulated In Name Only? L ■" i 1 this attic is this attic i "insulated” \ - ; , When is an attic really insulated? If there’s only a thin layer of insulation between the joists in your attic, it’s insulated in name only—and it’s costing you money year after year in higher fuel and air-conditioning costs. To be insulated, building experts say you should have at least 4 inches of insulation. The air-conditioning and electric heating industries suggest at least 6 inches. Perhaps you don’t know whether your attic is really insulated because, like most people, you bought the insulation as part of the house and didn’t check its thickness. Even if you did check it, it’s well to do it again. Many insulations don’t retain their original thickness. Take a ruler and push it into your insulation alongside the attic joists. If the insulation is too thin or uneven or doesn’t cover some areas, a simple, economical remedy is to pour a fill insulation, such as expanded vermiculite, over the present insulation. You can do this. Just pour lightweight vermiculite from the bag and level it to the proper thickness. This mineral insulation is available at your local lumber or building supply dealer. The cost of using vermiculite is about 3 cents a board foot and a - 4” thickness over 1000 sq. ft. of ceiling area can save up to j 50 dollars a year in heating cost alone, says the Vermiculite i Institute. 1 4 . 1 Dramatic, Functional i I Accent Wall Striking Handsome accent walls, which ate functional as well as decorative, can be incorporated into almost any decorative arrangement. This full-length wall has many features. It has ample display and storage space, as well as a built-in TV and hi-fi system. The eye-catching Marlite woodgrain accent wall serves as a focal point over the fireplace. Marlite has a smooth plastic Surface, which can be damp-wiped clean. Heat, moisture and stains will not affect it. This plastic-surfaced hardboard can be put up over old walls, or framing if a new wall is to be added. « Kortenber Insulation 349 Mercer Avenue PHONE 3-4087 SAVE %th OF YOUR HEATING BILL WITH BLOWN-IN INSULATION! Kitchen And Laundry Ideas Improve Home There is a growing demand for better organized kitchens and laundries from the individual homemaker’s standpoint. And in modernizations of kitchens and laundries in older homes, women are, in a sense, experts. Having worked in their old kitchens, they are thoroughly aware of space limitations and basic faults. There is a great demand in remodeled kitchens to provide space for daily meals or a desk. Personal tastes also dictate the number of cabinets, racks and spice shelves — or whether another window is desirable. Even better lighting and additional outlets have been carefuly considered by the • time the modernization is under--1 way. 1 What appliances are usually add- ■ ed when the kitchen or laundry 1 is modernized? In kitchens, according to Edison Electric Institute ■ dishwashers and food disposers. The surprising new addition is an
air conditioner. A cool kitchen, homemakers reason, is a clean kitchen, foods do not become messy, insects can be kept out, curtains stay fresh, grease stains do not spread, moisture becomes less of a problem. Such items as salads and desserts prepare better in an air-conditioned room. Airconditioning also adds a sense of space to small areas. In fact, the smaller the kitchen, the more likely it is to benefit from air-condition-ing. Like an office worker, the homemaker finds that such chores as ironing, laundry, or cooking are better accomplished in a cool kitchen. When laundry areas are remodeled, it is usually a flameless electric clothes dryer that is added. Home Service Departments in

Painting Aluminum Unlike iron rust, the whitish oxide that coats exposed aluminum provides an excellent base for paint. Remove any loose surface dirt by brushing or light sanding and wash away any oil or grease with a cloth dampening with paint thinner. For ordinary exposures, use any conventional metal or house paint primer, but where the atmosphere is corrosive or in shore aftas, use zinc chromate as a prirtaer. The top coat can be any quality paint or enamel suitable for t|e exposure, with two coats being advised.
