Kennedy actually elected President of the United States, and what was his vote that counted? How many electoral votes did Barry Goldwater receive for vice-president in 1960? Although the election of 1960 is only two years away, must of us, including the editor, had completely forgotten the only part of the election that really counted, the vote in the electoral college. By the time that the electoral college met, December 19,1960, election day had been almost forgotten. Although the popular vote was 84,221,485 for Kennedy, 34,108,684 for Nixon, this made little difference. The votes that counted was Kennedy’s 303-219 victory in the electoral college. There were also 15 votes for Harry F. Byrd for president, 14 votes for J. Strom Thurmond for vice-president, and one vote for Barry Goldwater. Although the people of Oklahoma voted for the Nixon-Lodge ticket, one of the electors, as was his privilege, voted for his own choice in the electoral college, Byrd and Goldwater. • . If 35 electors had withheld their votes from Kennedy and Johnson, the election would have been thrown to the House of Representatives — and many Southerners earnestly desired this. There, on a vote in which each state would have had just one vote, it would have taken the defection of just four Southern states to keep the Democrats from getting a majority of 26 — and if no president had been chosen by January 20, Lyndon B. Johnson would have been acting president. The electoral college is an outdated, ineffective body. It is time — well past time, really — for a Constitutional amendment allowing the President of the United States to be elected by popular vote. The college, which was well intended, hits not worked out since the election of 1800. It has permitted a minority candidate to be elected several times, thus thwarting the will of the people.
