You, Your Child And The School
By DAVID NYDICK UPI Education Specialist Is there more to learning than the academic s übjects? The in - dividual who is “handy around the house” has many skills. These special abilities are valuable and should be developed. Many schools have included the development of manual skills in their total program. However, there is limited emphasis on these areas before the junior and senior high schools. Even at these upper grade levels, there is little or no attention given to these subjects for girls and boys enrolled in regular academic courses. There are, of course, vocational type high s chools, but these are only for those choosing the highly specialized programs. Generally, in the elementary school, the extent of these types of subjects depends upon the interest and ability of individual teachers and the limits of available equipment. Threfore, parents have a large responsibility. There are many opportunities for t eaching these techniques to children. Judgement as to the age for introducing particular skills is important. As in all areas, individual children vary in grownth areas. You can show a six year old how to hold a hammer, while you would consider it dangerous to have him working with electricity. The development of the basic abilities is necessary before the learning of the actual useful skill. There is a direct connection between operating many toys and operaing drills, screw drivers, and hammers. Wach your child as he plays aad you will ’get an

idea of when he has developed the physical ability to handle particular equipment safey. Your purchase of toys and games can be planned to include those which will help your child develop coordination. For the young child, you will find many devices such as building and construction sets, hammering toys, etc. As the child grows older, these items should become smaller and more detailed. The building of model cars and airplanes is helpful if they are not to difficult to complete. Do not give the child materials which are so advanced that he loses inerest and becomes frustrated. Beyond the use of toys, you will have to be resourceful. Help your child understand how to repair minor problems around the home. Building a simple shelf, or putting a "do it yourself” table together all are part of this learning. This field of education is highly dependent upon the efforts of parents. Your emphasis should be upon growth of confidence and a wide variety of skills. The rewards of being handy are great. Besides the monetary savings, there is the wonderful feeling of accomplishment. 20 Years Ago Today Oct. 19, 1942 — Mrs. Charles Estel, 63, suffered fatal burns when a gasoline stove exploded at her home, two and one-half miles northwest of Monroe. Thirty-seven colts were entered in the annual suckling colt show held at Berne.
