I will become age 65 in January, 1963 and am planning on retiring at that time. How soon should I file my claim for social security benefits? A. You can file your application for benefits as much as three months before you reach retirement age. We recommend you file at least two months ahead of time to allow time for your claim to be processed and assure delivery of your first check shortly after you retire. 2. Q. My wife and I have had our grandson to raise since his parents were killed in an accident when he was very young. We receive a small social security benefit for him on the basis of his father’s earnings. When I retire next year will he be able to draw benefits on my account? My earnings are considerably higher than his father’s were. A. The social security act does not provide for payments to dependent grandchildren. We can pay benefits only if the dependent child is the natural, adopted or step-child of the retired or deceased worker. 3. Q. What is the largest social security benefit that cen be paid to one family? A. The maximum benefit payable to one family unit or the

basis of a retired, disabled, or deceased worker’s account is $254 a month. The actual amount received depends on the number of eligible dependents and the worker’s average earnings credited under social security. 4. Q. I understand that my wife will be entitled to one-half of my benefit amount when I retire. Does this mean she gets one-half of the total amount and I get the half that is left? 1 A. Absolutely not. You will receive your full benefit amount just as though your wife was not entitled to benefits. She will simply receive an amount equal to onehalf of your benefit at 65. Os course, if she starts receiving benefits before she is 65 year of age the amount will be reduced. 5. Q. Once you start receiving social security benefits is there anyway to get them raised? A. There are only two ways in which your social security benefit can be increased. One is If congress passes a law authorizing a general increase to all the persons already receiving benefits or certain categories of beneficiaries such as happened in 1959 and again in 1961. The other way benefits may be increased is if you go back to work for higher wages than you were making before you retired. In this case, we can refigure you benefits to give you the advantage of including these higher earnings in computing the benefit amount. 6. Q. I have checked with the county where I was born and also with the state capitol and find there was no official record ever made of my birth. How am I going to be able to establish my age for social security benefits? I will be 65 next year. A. Many people are rather upset to find there are no records of their birth, but it is not unusual. For example, the recordation of births in the state of Indiana was not mandatory until about 1910, so anyone born before that time can consider themselves lucky if their birth was recorded. <£>

Fortunately this doesn’t usually present a problem, because people seem to have a natural knack for getting their age or birthdate recorded in some manner during their life. The social security administration can accept almost any document that was recorded a number of years ago. Some examples would be life insurance policies, baptismal certificates, army discharges, voting registrations and so on. Os course the sooner after your birth the record was made, the better it is for our purposes. In any event, even if you cannot come up with one of the documents be sure to file your claim and then we will be able to discuss what you may be able to furnish to establish your date of birth.
