Yom Kippur On Monday, the last of the High Holy days which started with the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, at Sundown last Friday, will be celebrated. Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, ends a ten-day period of spiritual self*evaluation and goal setting for the believers in the Jewish faith. The holiest fast day on the calendar, Jewish tradition says the preceding days of repentence determine each man’s fate for the coming year. More than 3,000 years ago, Moses issued the following command to his followers, —“ln the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have a holy convocation, ye shall do no sevrile work; it is a day of Wowing the Shofar unto you.” Christmas can find this admonission in 29:1 of the book of Numbers in the Old Testament. Hashanah starts the new year for the Jewish people, but of course they do not reckon time from Christ, but an earlier date, so the new year, based also on the lunar rather than the solar calandar, is 5,723, rather than 1962. Followers of the religion of Islam, whom we called Mohammedans, also have a different calendar, basing time from the flight of the Prophet from Mecca to Medina in our year 622 — so it is the Islam year 1,340. According to Jewish belief, the destiny of all men and nations for the coming year is finally sealed by God, depending on the prayers of the faithful, and how they have followed the will of God. “L’Shanh Tovah Tikatayvu”—May you be inscribed for a good year — is the geeting used by Jewish people during the High Holy Day. editorial Writer Today Dick D. Heller, Jr.

Union Chapel EUB Services Continue Rev. Walter King spoke again Thursday at the Union Chapel EUB church. His subject was “From Saint to Sinner in Seven seconds.” His basis for thought was taken from the book of St. Luke, chapter 18:10-14. “Two went up into the temple to pray, one a pharisee, another a publican. “One prayed with himself; one prayed to God for himself. One was engaged in a monologue, the The former could not see his God other in a two way conversation, because of his wicked self being in the way. The latter could not even look up to God, but beat on his breast and cried out: ‘Lord, have mercy on me a sinner.’ He just asked for mercy. He did not even ask for salvation, sanctification of justification, just mercy. God heard him, and perhaps even before he even finished that prayer of seven words, God heard and not only extended mercy, but also salvation. “It is not in the praying of long well worded prayers that counts with God, but a few simple, earnest and broken, often sobbing utterances that God hears. We do not have to seek long and wait for hours for God to hear that cry of mercy. When he calls and we 20 Years Ago Today Oct. 5, 1942 — William Ehrsam, who has been serving as deputy Adams county surveyor, has been nominated by the Democratic central committee for surveyor, replacing his brother* Harley, who resigned to enter Army service. Nearly 50,000 pounds of scrap metal were collected here by Boy Scouts and other volunteer workers in an intensive one-day campaign. Seventy four men, the largest contingent to date, were sent to Toledo today for physical examinations under selective service. Three Democratic nominees for county ofices will have no opposition in the November election, as the Republicans filed no candidates against John L. DeVoss, prosecutor; Robert H. Heller, joint state representative, and Ernest Worthman, assessor. The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees Sunday, 9-6, and today, 4-2, for their fourth victory in a row to win the 1942 World Series by a 4-1 margin. | Modern Etiquette | I By Roberta Lee I Q. Some fellows I’ve never met occasionally phone me trying to make blind dates. Would it be proper for me to accept any of these? A. Blind dates are dangerous, unless arranged by a friend. In this case you mention, it’s almost like being “picked up” on the street. Boys who do their blind dating on telephones are usually pretty poor pickings, or they wouldn’t have to get dates this way. Q. I attended a bridal shower recently in honor of my future daughter-in-law, and I was criticized for signing my name on the card enclosed with my gift as “Mrs. Frank L. Winters.” Was I really in error? A. You should have signed your name as “Mary Winters.” Q. When introducing a young woman of about 18 to a middleaged man, whose name is spoken first? A. The young woman’s

at onee seek him, he is at that very time rrfaking ready to hear us, forgive us, cleanse us and extend to us the gift of gifts This world could be saved in short order if it would repent and cry out for mercy. •'Notice the characteristics of these two individuals. One was a religious man. He attended church very faithfully; he tithed, (even above it). He was the leader in prayer in temple worship. He was a good citizen, looked up to. The other man was a poor tax collector, one hated by all. He no doubt like all the collectors was perhaps—a thief. Yet this one hated by all was the only one that got the signal through to God’s mercy. “Today, we have pharisees in the pulpit and in the pew. Many are educated and over educated. They are good citizens, respected, promoters of graceful form, but denying the very power of the Holy Spirit. They are often lost right in the church. Just as this religionist could not find God because of himself being in the way, so this happens again and again this very day.” Box Elder Bugs To Be Topic On Radio Box elder bugs, and what can be done to stop them before the annual fall invasion, will be the topic of county agent Leo N. Seltenright and Jay Gould on radio station WOWO when the two talk together Monday at 6 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. Seltenright wil lexplain what can be done besides eliminating female box elder trees from the neighborhood, which will not entirely remove the pests.
