WivM Attkt nlfO luMm Husbands In Running Boats By HOBTENSE MTEBS United Prens International INDIANAPOLIS <UPI> — The men who go down to the rivers and lakes in boats probably would drown, starve or get lost if it were not for their feminine first mates. Adequate proof of this can be had any Thursday evening at a meeting of the Hoosier Power Squadron in the Indianapolis Anval Armory. This civilian organization and similar squadrons at Fort Wayne, Brazil, Columbus and Bedford are part of the US. Power Squadrons formed in 1914 to educate “yachtmen and others.’’ The general aim of the 300 squadrons scattered through landlocked areas as well as on the coasts is to teach water craft owners how to stay alive. Membership in.the squadrons is limited to males. — , But at least one-fourth of the students taking the free courses given here each Thursday are women. The courses are in beginning and advanced piloting, seamanship, junior navigation, navigation, engine maintenance, weather observation and sailing. “First Mates’* The women who pass the courses—and most of them do—get a somewhat smaller certificate than the men which credits them with being “first mates.” Mrs., Fred Heckjnan, Indianapolis, one of seveif women who completed three courses here and are beginning their fourth ths winter, explained “this is one way you get a night out a week with your husband." Mrs. Heckman, a native of wa-ter-logged Delaware, said “I was afraid to cross the bay on a ferry when I first met Fred. But with four small children, we would never be able to have a night out once a week if I hadn’t become interested in boats." Mrs. Lou Ristine, whose husband, Lt. Gov. Richard Ristine, is an honorary member of the Hoosier Squadron, is convinced “boating is one thing the whole family can enjoy, no matter what age. There is always something to do around a boat” She conceded that cooking was the thing she does most when the Ristines spend weekends on their 27-foot craft, Lou II which they keep at Madison on the Ohio River. Sometimes she prepares food - to advance and on XJtoer occasions she cooks aboard, Beat Built In Barn Lou I was built in a bam near Crawfordsville by the Ristines, and sold later for Lou II which is a bigger craft. Mrs. William Marlowe, Indianapolis, whose husband is commanded of 'the Hoosier Squadron, explained that their boat is called Casa Mar—House of the Sea—because it is a second home. The wives said much of the fun derived from boating was the sense of shared adventure they gained by being able to help their husbands in a co-pilot role. “There are so few rules and so few hazards on water compared to the highway," one wife commented, “But those rules must be observed. It makes me furious to see safety rules disregarded.. Take that picture of Jackie Kennedy for example. She was water siding without a life jacket How can I convince my teen-agers they must wear a life jacket if the First Lady doesn’t?”' Too Much Polish In the event that too much oil polish has collected on some of your furniture, mix a quarter of a cup of vinegar with a half-cup of water, dip a soft cloth in this mixture, and rub the furniture with it. Dry immediately with a soft cloth.
