RUTH AND NAOMI CIRCLE ZION UNITED CHURCH The regular monthly meeting of the Ruth and Naomi Circle of the Zion United Church of Christ was held in the church parlors recently. Vice chairman, Mrs. Floyd Shoaf, presided. The meeting was opened with the Lord’s prayer and the group sang, “Faith of Our Fathers" and “Are Ye Able." The lesson was given by Mrs. Ermal Johnson. A silent prayer for Mrs. Rufus Kirchhofer closed the meeting. There were 23 social and seven sick calls* Seventeen members were present. Hostesses were Mrs. Tony Meyer, Mrs. Herman Haugk ATTEND CONVENTION OF VALPARAISO GUILD Mrs. Herman Krueckeberg served as chairman of the resolutions committee and Mrs. Louis Jacobs was reelected second vice president at the national convention of the Valparaiso University Guild held on campus Friday to Sunday, Sept. 28 to 30. Mrs. Krueckeberg also represented the Decatur circuit chapter of the guild, in its 139 chapters. North, the chapters are located as far as Minnesota, and are found on the east coast, in Florida, Louisiana, Arizona and west to California. The national guild, with all chapters participating, completed this year’s project of giving $35,000 to the university for furnishing the new Brandt hall, a domitory for men, and special altar linens and vestments for use in the memorial chapel. New national projects include two gifts: $20,000 for each of two years to add a lounge and connect Dau and Kreinheder halls, women’s domitories, and $20,000 each year for two years for complementing salaries of teaching staff. The guild annually undertakes national projects of various kinds to improve facilities and services at the university. Dr. Oliver Harms, newly-elected president of the Lutheran churchMissoui Synod, and Mary Merryfield, noted columist forthe Chicago Tribune, were the principal convention speakers. A report of the convention by Mrs. Krueckeberg wil also be given. CATHOLIC GIRL SCOUTS HOLD AWARD NIGHT Awards were given to five troops of the Catholic Brownies and Girl Scouts, Thursday evening in the Catholic school auditorium. This was the first of five combined meetings to be held by the Catholic scouts. The next will be held in December. The program was opened with the flag ceremony, followed with a Scout prayer, lead by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Simeon Schmitt, chaplain of the Catholic Scouts. The parents, teachers and friends were welcomed by Mrs. Andrew Miller, the organizer. A few words about scouting were given by Mrs. Robert Sittier, neighborhood chairman who was a guest as was Mrs. Eugene Rydell, district chairman. The Rt. Rev. Msgr, Schmitt assisted by Mrs. Edward Hammond, consultant, then presented the Brownie pins, star pins and secondclass badges to the parents who pinned them on their girls. The meeting was then turned over to Mrs. Robert Eash, who presented a program on day camp with the Scouts. On October 7, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn A. Workinger, Monroe, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. They were married October 5, 1912. They have four children: Mrs t Clarence Rowdon, Mrs.; Rene Brandt, Charles and Dale, all in or near Monroe. They also have eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. A family dinner is planned. Friends are invited to a reception which will be held in the Monroe Methodist church from 2 to 5 p. m.

Troop 189, Mrs. Edward Hackman and Mrs. James McGill. The Everready class of the First Methodist church will meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the church. The St. Cecelia study club will meet at the home of Mrs. Gerald Grove Thursday evening at 8 o’clock. Locals Paul Feller visited his brother, Ron, a senior at Heidelberg college, last weekend. While there, he attended the Heidelberg-Ohio Wesleyan football game. Dr. Frederick B. Shroyer returned Sunday to his home in Monterey Park, Calif. after attending the funeral of his uncle, Edgar Mutschler. Mrs. Glenn Mauller, 427 Stratton Way, left for New York City Sunday evening where she will spend two weeks taking the traing course given by Welcome Wagon, Inc., to become a hostess in the organization. Mr. and Mrs. Jerold Lobsiger of 426 North 4th Street, entertained members and friends of the cast of “The Desk Set,” now appearing at the Fort Wayne civic theatre, at their home after the Saturday night performance. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schmitz spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schmitt of Columbia City. Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Harper have returned home from Colorado Springs, Colo., having been gone ten days. Mrs. Chalmer Denny and daughter, Judy, of Kokomo, spent the weekend with Mrs. Denny’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Dan Tyndall. Charles and Dorothy Ziegler Spangler of 1515 West Madison, Decatur, are the parents of a baby boy born at 7:34 p.m. Sunday weighing seven pounds and three ounces. Young Man Killed By Load Os Poles STILESVILLE, Ind. (UPI) — Donald Harvey Collier, 17, was killed Saturday when a load of poles fell on top of him from a big truck. Authorities said the youth was helping load the truck which was used in his family’s sawmill and Togging business. The mishap occured in front of the family home a mile northwest of here.

Ruth Rawlinson Is Society Editor Os Decatur Democrat Mrs. Ruth Rawlinson, wife of John Rawlinson, owner of the Decatur Western Auto store, began work today as society editor on the Decatur Daily Democrat, succeeding Mrs. Colleen Heller, who was society editor for the past year. Mrs. Rawlinson is a native of Grand Haven, Mich., and a graduate of Western Michigan university, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi honorary. She taught school for four years in Hart, Sturgis, and Grand Rapids, Mich. The subjects which she taught in high school were commercial and English. The new society editor has lived in Decatur three years, and she and her family are members of the Zion United Church of Christ. The couple have one daughter, Nora, 14, who is a freshman at Decatur high school. She is also a member of the Dramatic department of the Woman’s club.
