Adair-Hoffa Teamup? We were greatly surprised when scanning the Congressional record for September 19 to find that opr congressman from Fort Wayne, E. Ross Adair, now running for his seventh term, bravely defended the rights of Jimmy Hoffa to a fair and speedy trial. Now, no real American questions Hoffa’s rights to this. But it is not at all unusual for trials which concern dozens of lawyers on both sides to take quite a bit of time, as we laymen measure time. We coaid not understand why Adair, who certainly has never been so interested in Civil Rights before, even when law-abiding citizens were concerned, such as the ICLU, would suddenly spring to his feet in staunch defense of a questionable union boss. ... - And then we remembered. Os course! Hoffa has kept the teamsters union “loyal” to the Republican party in so far as he was able. No wonder Adair was interested. With all the teamsters that are located in Indiana, and with campaign contributions coming from this source, he would be aided in his bid for a seventh term in Congress. And then, toe, this was another chance to jab at Robert Kennedy, brother of the president. (There are many people who question the wisdom of appointing one’s brother to a cabinet post, but this, of course, is not a reflection on the ability of the brother. A criticism of the brother’s ability must be judged by what he has done, and tried to do, while in office). We do not question anyone’s right to a fair and speedy trial. But we do question those who try to use the trial as a political steppingstone back into Congress. Hoffa was indicted originally in 1960, and the trial, through various legal maneuvers, is still dragging on. But this can hardly be blamed on the attorney-general It would seem wise to look elsewhere, to the trial procedure itself, for the answer. But Adair is so involved with partisan politics that he cannot take time to do this. What happened in the case was the chief justice in the southern district of Florida removed the case from the docket because the trial would not be completed before a new district was formed on October 15, after a dismissal and a postponement that indicated that at best neither side was particularly interested in immediate trial. ToSlame this on the attorney-general is really rather ridiculous even if the procedure in the court was wrong — Certainly np judge acts solely on the advice of one side of a case, and if he did, it would be an indictment against the whole legal profession, not just the attorney-general. editorial Writer Today w - Dick D.
