Commodores Are Edged By Pleasant Mills The Decatur Catholic Commodores finished their county baseball league season Monday afternoon when they were edged by Pleasant Mills. 7-6. at the Spartan diamond. The loss evened the Commodores record for county play to three wins and three losses. The Decatur nine has one game remaining on the schedule, Friday, entertaining Monroeville at the Hanna Park diamond. Pleasant Mills, who won its first game of the season, did an its scoring in two innings, and the game was called after five and one-half innings due to darkness. Singles by Terry Myers and Ed Kdhne .and doubles by Mike Baker, the losing hurler, and Pat Gage, accounted for three Decatur runs in the third inning. Four-Run Fourth The Spartans retaliated, however, with three runs in their half of the third on a walk, three Decatur errors and Rex Funk’s single, and then wrapped up the contest with a four-run salvo in the fourth frame. The Spartans used two walks, a hit batsman, a single by Butler and <Rdx Burkhart’s double, to tally four times. The Commodores had regained the lead in the top of the fourth on a single by Dan Lose and Dick ,Omlor’s double, before Pleasant Mills came back with their barrage. Junior High Plays Parkway Thursday The Decatur junior high football team will play its second game of the season Thursday afternoon, when they travel to Rockford, 0., to meet Parkway. The local eleven soundly whipped the Parkway team by a 41-13 score at Worthman field last week, but ,ia not expected to have such an easy time this week. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 , p.m., and the game will be played on the Rockford field. Parkway is the Willshire-Rockford consolidation. The Parkway team had started opening practice sessions two weeks later than the Decatur team and with the home field advantage, are expected to give Decatur more trouble than last week when nearly 80 boys saw action for the local. Strong Offensive Decatur threw up a strong running game and an outstanding passing game against Parkway last week. Quarterback Bill Brown passed for two touchdowns, one to Tom Lose, the other to Lo n Hawkins, for TD’s in last week’s game, and passed twice to Hawkins and twice to Dave Anderson for extra points. Lose added a touchdown on a run, and run for an extra point, while Jim Hueston ran for a touchdown, and John Schultz scored a TD on a pass interception. Phil Hess, who alternates with Brown at quarterback, directed the team to another touchdown, scoring the six points on a quarterback sneak. Approximately 38 boys are expected to make the trip to Rockford for Thursday’s contest. Following the Thursday game, Decatur will play New Haven’s junior high twice and Village Woods, a new Haven junior high school, once, in the following three weeks. Golds And Purples Ploy Scoreless Tie The Golds and the Purples battled to a scoreless tie in a seventh grade intra-squad game at Worthman Field Monday afternoon. Both of’ the two seventh grade teams threatened during the contest, but neither could break the scoring ice. The seventh- graders will play another intra-squad game next Monday at 4:30 p.m. Booster Club Will Meet On Wednesday The Decatur high school Booster club will hold a meeting Wednesday evening at the home of president Jim Cowens. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 o’clock Wednesday night, and plans will be made for letterman’s night. Reserves Play Berne Here This Evening The Decatur high school reserve football team will play host to Berne tonight at Worthman field, with the opening kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m. Admission price is 10 cents. ' « - The local reserves are unbeaten in two contests, having soundly whipped the Bluffton reserves and Geneva’s varsity eleven. Berne is expected to use many of its varsity performers this evening.
Eagles Close Season With 6-2 Victory Monmouth broke a close bal game wide open in the top of the 6-2 victory over Adams Central, seventh inning, and held on for a in a game played at the Monroe diamond Monday. The victory enabled the Eagles to finish their season unbeaten, with six consecutive wins, and cop the county baseball league title. Righthander Don Brown went the route for Monmouth, allowing only two hits, a single by Rash in the second inning and an RBI single by Ringger in the seventh. Brown helped his own cause by walking three times and scoring a pair of runs . Dean Schieferstein's single in the second frame scored Brown and gave the winners a 1-0 lead. Monmouth upped the score to 2-0 in the third when they scored a run on a walk to Danny Conrad and Lennis Braun’s single. Adams Central scored once in the third without the benefit of a hit, to cut the lead to 2-1. The Eagles then blasted the game wide open in the seventh on two walks, two passed balls, a single by Scheumann and Denny Braun’s double. Brown fanned 12 and walked only tree.
