I CHURCH OF CHRIST 12th and Washington St. Larry Morrison, minister 9:15 Prayer Room | 9:30 Morning worship hour. LarI ry Morrison minister will present I the message. | 10:30 Bible school hour. Gene Schindler, Supt. We urge all those absent in the past few Sundays to be present. You all have much to gain from God’s words. t Which call will you answer? Jesus says “Come unto me all yea that labor and are heiivy laden and 1 will give you rest” (Matt. 12:28) Satan says "I wil give you the world with its excitement and plea-; sures (If You will Fall Down and • Worship Me”) (Matt. 4-9) What do you crave? Do you want rest for the soul or pleasure for the body? Do you want to be like Christ who will save you through all eternity or like Satan who will destroy your body and soul and cause you to spend all eternity suffering? Do you want to worship God who created you or Satan who works day and night to destroy God’s creation? Each day you yourself [ choose who you will serve. Each . Sunday you and you alone choose r whom you will worship. If you are absent from God’s house at the worship hour and refuse to keep your appointment at the table of memory and fail to bring the tithe cents the storehouse, and all these without excuse acceptable unto God, then is it not true that you choose to answer Satan, not God. I hope that as you read this you will pray to God to help you always make the right choice as to whom you will serve and whom you will worship. Choose God and answer his call to worship. Be in church this next ord’s Day. ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH Richard C. Ludwig, Pastor 11th and Monroe Streets Divine Worship services at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday school meets at 9:15 a. m. When a man of 80 was arfted “What season of life is the happiest?” he answered by pointing to a grove of trees in front of his house. “When spring comes and in the soft air the buds are crowned with blossoms, I think how beautiful is spring. The Church Invites You The soul of man represents the highest purpose of God’s creative energy. The human soul, according to scientists, is the last chapter of this history as far as it has been written. Science finds that everything is a continuously developing and intelligent process. It reveals man as a being with a snul which is progressing more and more toward divinity in a universe of unbroken continuity. If our souls assmue this much importance in God’s master plan, it behooves us to cultivate out spiritual life that our souls may grow and we may acquire spiritual maturity. eW have the Light of the world to illumine our paths and we must keep constantly aware of the importnace of traveling life’s highways according to God’s laws and God’s will, which are proclaimed in the church. CLERICUS SAYS CLERICUS SAYS: God does not hold us responsible for the environment into which we are born, nor the circumstances of life, but He does hold us responsible for what we do in these circumstances. It it what we do, not what we inherit that interests God. Repent herlt that interests God. Repentance calls for determined action toward righteous living; it is something one does. As man seeks forgiveness and is pardoned, he may •' achieve a new heart and a new spirit. The rebirth of hear and soul issues from changed attitudes. Faith in God helps God to do in us what we can neer do for ourelevs. I I Wisdornwl Said one taxpayer t o the other, “You shouldn’t be grumbling about taxes. Just think of how wounderful it is to live in a country like ours. You should pay your taxes with a smile.” Said the second taxpayer: “Well, I’d be glad to, but do you think the government would settle for that?” with heavy foliage and singing birds are among the branches, I think how beautiful is the summer. And then, when fall loads the trees with golden fruit and the leaves begin to bear those gorgeous tints, I cannot help thinking how beautiful is the fall. But winter comes, and there is neither foliage nor fruit. But I have only to look up, and there through the leafless branches I see what was hidden before — the stars of heaven shining through.” WHAT IS A GOOD FORMULA FOR BEING POPULAR? “Perhaps the most arresting bit of personal advice we ever encountered was this: If you want to be popular, live so that a blind person would like you. The point is that lasting popularity depends not on one’s having a pretty face or being handsome, but upon inijer qualities that communicate themselves to others through media other than sight. These personality assets are expressed through such things as a gentle voice — persistent friendliness — small kindnesses — thoughtfulness of the other fellow’s tender ego — deserved praise — excursions in encouragement. These attributes, if conscientiously developed, will—in time — give you a radiant personality —for keeps. How well I would a blind person like you?”| — Selected. i

CREAMED COMMENTS CREAMED COMMENTS ON THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON, GOOD TIDINGS TO THE EXILES, Isaiah 40:1-5; 52:7-9, for Sunday, | August 26. The Israelites had spent approximately 70 years in captivity, and had paid for their nationa’s sins. The time of deliverance was at hand. Cyrus of Persia was preparing to besiege Babylon and they would be free to return to their homeland. Isaiah brought these good tidings to the captives that they might set their faces toward a bright new day. V. 1. “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saidth your God.” God had not deserted his people and God yearned for comfort to be bestowed as the sequel of chastisement. V. 2. “Speek ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that here warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.” The prophet was to speaik tender words of consolation to the chastened people. The Babylonian age was coming to a close, and the Persian age was about to dawn. The exile period was to end and with it the prophet announced their expiation of guilt. Israel had now paid in full for her evil ways. V. 3. “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of, the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” This verse reflects the Eastern custom of sending advance men to prepare the way for the march of a monach through undeveloped rural regions. Forces beyound the control of the Israelites and beyond their knowledge were preparing their pathway back to their homeland. God was to prepare a highway for the weary exiles. All obstacles would vanish and all stumbling blocks be removed. Later John the Baptist was the voice in the wilderness. V. 4. “Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:” There was wilderness and desert between Babylon and Jerusalem down the road the exiles were to go. The prophet was asking the exiles to get ready to return to Judah and prepare for the manifestation of God who would lead them home. V. 5. “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.” The knowledge of God was not to be limited to the Hebrew people. In time all people were to know and understand the magnimicence of God. Because the Hebrew prophets considered themselves spokesmen of God, they often emphasized their teachings by proclaiming, “Thus saith the Lord.” The “glory of the Lord” may be observed throughout the Bible history as a special manifestation of God to men of faith. V. 7. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publish peace; that bringeth good THE BETTER WAY Herbert Hoover has said: “There are some Old Things that made this country. There is the Old Virtue of religious faith. There are the Old Virtues of integrity and the whole truth. There is the Old Virtue of incorruptible service and honor in public office. There are the Old Virtues of economy in government, of self-reliance, thrift, and individual liberty. There are real love of country, and a willingness to sacrifice for it. These ’old’ ideas are very inexpensive. They will raise the cuss word ‘reactionary.’ But some of these Old Things are slipping badly in American life. And if they slip too far, the lights will go out in America. even if we win these hot and cold wars.” i
