Redwood Paneling Ideal Interior - Exterior Material
Paneling with redwood gives a room interior the warmth of wood yet permits a more versatile expression not always possible with other materials. Redwood also provides a diversity of tones and colors, grains and textures and has the ability to take a wide variety of different finishes. For an accent wall in a family room or den, for a bedroom, and even for bathrooms and kitchens, redwood paneling is finding increasing popularity thanks to its resistance to decay and insect attacks. And it stands up to moist conditions better than most woods. Redwood enhances indoor-out-door living with beauty and dura-

1 Do-It-Yourselfers Now Can Install Hardwood Floors Thanks to manufacturing advances even a novice can install a hardwood floor in less than eight hours — if he can drive a nail, and thanks to a new special sized oak flooring designed for remodeling. Called Bruce "Crestwood,” the “midget” floor is only 3/8-inch thick, about half the thickness of regular oak strips. It lays right over old wood floors and installs so easily, says the manufacturer, that the do-it-yourselfers can begin in the morning and* complete an average room in time for dinner. A small four-inch tool guides nails and sets them at a proper depth. This unique tool consists of a nailing plate, fitted to the tongue edge, and a matching nail set. ■ Sanding and finishing are eliminated. “Crestwood,” for example comes p're-sanded, pre-finished, even pre-waxed from the factory

bility and is equally suited te exterior siding as it is to interior paneling. Smooth - surfacing redwood can be left unfinished in those areas that are safe from grease, dirt and moisture. Unfinished redwood is carefree. An occasional fine sandpaper onceover restores its fresh appearance. Ranging from., light pink to ma-hogany-tones, redwood also has a wide variety of texture and grains. The sapwood is a light, creamy yellow. On A-grade redwood and other grades containing sapwood, a pleasing contrast is achieved for interior paneling by the dark tones of the heartwood with the gold of the sapwood.

Looks Help Sell House What To Do Appearance of a home offered for sale is important. It pays to fix up in order to make a sale, according to John Concord, housing expect for Masonite Corporation. The reasons are simple: 1. The house will be sold more quickly. 2. You probably will get a top price. 3, You may deduct the fix-up expense for credit on your federal tax return. Paint Exterior Painting the exterior is one good way to get prospects’ interest, Concord points out. Having the yard and landscaping in good trim makes a good impression. The chimney should be in good repair. And what about the driveway? Some blacktop will sharpen this critical area immediately. Often one unusually attractive room can sell the house. It might be a kitchen, bathroom, living room den or recreation room. If one of these needs brightening to star status. Concord suggests a woodpaneled room, using one of the fac-tory-finished grain hardboards in walnut or cherry offered through lumber dealers by Masonite Corporation. Clean Up All Rooms Other rooms should not be neglected, of course, and here the owner has a choice of a thorough wall washing, painting, paneling or papering. Considerable sales appeal often can be added by putting in function- 1 al features, such as a Peg-Board [ lan attic into living - quarters* is small compared to the real value I gained in better living. Consult any Design-Service-Councel building supply dealer or other qualified lumber retailer for assistance in planning the renovation. Ask him about the new factory-finished Masonite woodgrained panels which come in two lines of decorator colors that require no finishing after installation. The boys or girls who occupy this room can keep it clean easily, as only occasional wiping with a damp cloth is needed. Walls That Wear Well The dent and wear-resistant Masonite woodgrained hardboards, available in shades of walnut and chrery, can be installed easily over studs or existing walls by handyman or professional labor. Accent walls of versatile Peg-Board and rugged Seadrift can also be considered. Take your ideas to the lumber dealer who can provide a design and counseling service. He can have your problem room translated by experts into a color render-’ ing which will enable you to visualize the improvement before you do it. “working wall” area in a utility room or kitchen. To obtain credit for the fix-up before a sale, the owner may not make a capital improvement, like a new roof, nor may he count the expense of a tax-deductible item such as a replacement of a wall struck by a truck. The work must be accomplished within 90 days of the sale and paid for within 30 days thereafter. MAKE PAPER PATTERN BEFORE LAYING LINOLEUM Paper’ patterns help on a neater job when you have to fit linoleum against an irregular wall outline, according to Popular Mechanics magazine. Paste pieces of heavy paper together with the edges butting snugly against the irregular outline. Lay the patetrn in position on the floor and coat it with rubber cement. Also apply cement to the back of the linoleum at the point where it will come over the paper. When the cement is nearly dry, place the linoelum in position, pressing the portion to be cut on the paper. If you have something to sell or trade — use the Democrat Want ads — they get BIG results.
