Killer Highways Listed Here INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—Slightiy more than half of Indiana’s highway system accounts for about 80 per cent of the state’s rural traffic accidents. State Police Tuesday released a list of 13 highways which have been trouble spots in connection with this year’s mounting highway toll. U.S. 41, with 29 deaths so far, headed the list. U.S. 35 was second with 22 and Indiana 37 had recorded 20. Other “toiller” highways with their tolls to date were U.S. 31. 16; U.S. 24, 15; U.S. 20. 14; Indiana 67, 13; U.S. 6, 11; Indiana 4G, 10; U.S. 40, 10; Indiana 3,9; U.S. 30, 8; and U.S* 231, 8. A police spokesman said that the 6,000 miles of trunkline highways which make up 56 per cent of the Indiana highway system accounted for/the bulk of all rural accidents. The spokesman said the worst single accident in the state .since Jan. 1 occurred last Saturday when seven persons were killed in a two-car collision on U.S. 24 in Newton County.
