20 Years Ago Today July 31, 1942 — Workers at the Wayne Novelty Co. lost about an hour’s work when lightning struck a 110-volt transformer during a storm early this morning. A heavy ranfall of 1.53 nches during the night brought the July total to 4.24 inches. T. C. Smith, chemist for the Central Sugar Co., who served in the chemical warfare division during World War 1, spoke on "gas warfare" at the weekly meeting of Decatur Rotarians. Elisha Little suffered the loss of a small part of a little finger when his right hand was caught in an elevator at the McConnel & Sons wholesale house, where he is employed as a salesman. Two large barns in southern Adams county, on farms pwned by Grover Grove and Mrs. John Wickelson, were destroyed after being struck by lightning last night.
