The Hoosier governor met with newsmen after a 20-minute conference with Kennedy. Welsh said he handed the chief executive a letter on the project, which included maps and exhibits to illustrate “the great importance we in Indiana attach to the project.” The governor was accompanied by his administrative assistant, Clinton Green, secretarytreasurer of the Indiana Port Commission. “He listened to our presentation of the matter and said he would give it serious consideration,” Welsh said. “We didn’t ask him for anything.” Welsh said no specific invitation was made to Kennedy to campaign in Indiana this fall. “He knows he is always welcome,” tfaej governor said with a grin; Welsh denied Republican claims that Kennedy’s popularity is waning in Indiana. The President is tremendously more popular now than in November, 1960, Welsh said, and any other view is “politically unrealistic.”

SaysG.O.P. I In Dire Need I Os Transfusion By LYLE C. WILSON United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) —Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s announcement that the Republi- ] can party is the businessman’s ] party needs both further definition j and practical application. Espe- j daily, it needs practical applied- ; tion. What the Republican party' needs more than a promise to be anybody's party is a commitment ‘ to a set of couragebus political I principles that clearly distinguish ‘ it from the Democratic party. The Republican party also ' needs a blood transfusion to fire it up to the degree required to enable a Republican national convention to function with the courage of the party’s conservative convictions. In addition to political principles that clearly distinguish the Republican party from the Democratic party, the GOP needs presidential nominees who.are clearly distinguishable from Democratic presidential nominees. Above all, when a first class, all-out Republican statesman is availably for the party’s presidential ’ nomination, the GOP needs enough selfconfidence to name that man. That self-confidence was lacking, for example, in 1952 when the Republicans nominated General Eisenhower in preference to the late Sen. Robert A. Taft. As it turned out, God was good to the party and to the United States when Ike was chosen. Had Taft been named there probably would have been some kind of compromise deal that would have put on the ticket with him the wooliest minded political maverick of stature in the Republican party. Taft soon died and had he been president, that wooly mind would have succeeded him in office. Ike’s claim that the Republican party was the businessman’s party caught a lot of headlines. It would have been more newsworthy if I»ke had said that the Republican party was a conservative party and hereafter would bid for the Republican vote, ignoring all others. That was Taft’s political creed. He told me long ago that he did not give a hoot for independents, liberals, political drift-' ers and such. Eisenhower was drafted for the 1952 Republican nomination by a combination of eastern Republi- i can leaders who generally are responsible for copying the GOP, steadily left "pfislTOn most recently occupied by the Democratic party. With these socalled me-too Republicans in command, the Republican party since 1940 has lost 13 of 17 national elections.’ ’ $50,000 In Gems Stolen A| Harvard CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (UPI) — Professional burglars cracked a safe at Harvard University’s mineralogical museum and stole $50,000 worth of gems including an 84 carat diamond, police disclosed today. Authorities said about 50 gems were taken and the thieves apparently had some knowledge of previous stones. A Harvard University spokesman said, however, the theft was “somewhat puzzling” since the stones are primarily useful only for scientific research and teaching. “Their value is chiefly scientific because of their unusual crystalline structure, their peculiar color and in some instances where they were found,” the spokesman, said. Police said a “professional” broke the steel and concrete safe from which selected gems including diamonds, opals, rubies, sapphires, and beryls were taken.
