most bedrooms have unused space along one wall. Usually, you don't even need to rearrange furniture; other times, maving the bed to another wall makes the addition practical, simple. Closets require only 2-foot depth and they can be as wide as the rtiom allows. Even a 2-foot wide closet provides storage for at least a dozen men’s suits or two or three times as many dresses. Above and below the clothes on hangers, there's added space for shoes, hats, accessories. These built-in are simple with
either lumber or plywood. Finished natural or with a light stain, the warmth and beauty of wood adds restful charm and updates the home. Choose a light-colored, economical wood such as western hemlock that readily accepts a wide range of stain tones or one of the new preflnished Craftwall hardwood panelings offered in a half-dozen woods and even more finishes. For the advanced do-it-your-self-er building a closet wall probably falls into the “moderately easy” category. When built by a professional, the project. would gp fast, cause little disruption of the home and usually cost only $350-$450 complete, unless there are unusually

A dishwasher that goes to the table saves many a step. Portable electric dishwashers like the one above can be rolled easily to the dining table when dinner’s over, to be loaded and rolled to the sink for the automatic washing operation. Between washings they keep dirty dishes out of sight or store sparkling clean ones until needed. The top serves as extra counter space. Since portables require no installation, they’re ideal for apartments or temporary homes. They wash dishes as clean as built-ins do, but can be taken along when the family moves.

Dishwasher Saves Time, Delegates Say ‘‘An automatic dishwasher is a luxury until you have one and then it becomes a necessity.” said one of the homemaker-del-egates to McCall’s Fifth Nation* al Congress on Better Living. Her statement expressed the majority opinion of the delegates from all SO states who have electric dishwashers. Some of the other comments taped during a discussion of automatic dishwashers* Included these: “I find they save an awful lot of time.” “It’s like a maid for me. I spend my evenings with my husband now, rather than in thio kitchen washing dishes.” “I like mine because you can put the breakfast and .lunch things in it when you are in a hurry and wash once a day.” "They get dishes sanitary-— colds don’t go through my family like they used to.” Some of the delegates who don’t have automatic dishwashers learned that many of their , pre-conceived notions about modern electric dishwashers were mistaken. They found out, for instance, that pre-rinsing dishes by hand is a waste of time if there’s a new electric dishwasher in the house. “Among my friends, I'm the only one who has a new dishwasher and there’s no comparison between this and the others I have seen,” one woman commented. “I never rinse them—just brush off loose food, and my dishes always come out clean," she explained. A few of the women experienced in the ways of automatic dishwashers told how they get “extra mileage” from them: “I use it a lot for canning.” “I do the baby’s bottles in the dishwasher before I sterilize them.” One woman even dries kitchen sponges and towels in her automatic dishwasher. Remodeling Has Become Way of Life Remodeling has become away of life for the American family, delegates to McCall’s Fifth National Congress on Better Living indicated when they met in Chi-; cago. More than nine out of ten! of tiie homemakers from air over the country ifrho were del-1 egates to the Congress own their! own homes. Most of these, plus some who rent, do remodeling., Why do they remodel? Mainly; to add to or improve living space. They need more bedrooms, baths, and storage space, or they want a patio, a porch, a family room or carport. Projects Easier Today Whether the remodeling’s done by the home owner or a professional, a wealth of both new and traditional building materials has made It easier,: and often lower in cost, for to-; day’s families to plan and carry : out remodeling projects, i Stock doors, windows, shutiters, fireplaces, staircases and even complete entranceways of j ponderosa pine, for instance, are available today at building supey centers throughout the couny. They come in a wide assortment of designs to blend with any decor, and are ready to install and paint or stain, i Reroofing—one of the projects many of the Congress’ delegates are contemplating—is less costly and time-consuming when asphalt shingles are applied over the old roofing. Attractive as well as rugged, they are available in many colors, any one of which can add new beauty and value to any home. Insulation Important I A complete new roof of asphalt shingles is an exbellent means of tying a new addition in with the rest of the house. Insulating properly — another project mentioned by the delegates—has also been simplified m recent years. Manufacturers now label batts and blankets of mineral wool with “R” numbers to help home owners buy the right insulation for complete comfort and fuel-saving. In many cases, the home owner can install batts or blankets of mineral wool himself. Dishwasher Babies Delicate Glassware The Glassware Institute of America says the safest way to wash any glassware, whether heavy-duty cookware or prized, delicate stemware, is in an electric dishwasher. Today’s automatic dishwashers get glassware spotlessly clean and shining without the risk of slipping from Soapy hands. Cushioned racks in all types of electric dishwashers—portable, convertible, and built-in—hold glasses safely while they are sanitized by hot water and detergent, rinsed with clear hot water, and sometimes a special rinsing agent, and then dried to the traditional brilliance of good glassware. * CONVERTIBLE VERSATILE Today’s convertible electric dishwashers provide the same time and work-saving features as other models. COPPER COMES CLEAN Copper-bottomed pots, like all other types of cooking utensils, can be washed safely In automatic electric dishwashers.
Dutch Ovsa Ccokoul When it comes to good old-fash-ioned camping cookbuts western style, there’s nothing like a east iron dutch oven. You can cook with it right over a campfire and beans stews, soups, biscuits (you name it) come out of the dutch oven tasting “scrumptious,” to quote a young “Cowboy.” The cast iron does a reel cooking job, through and through.
