The public is invited to attend all of the activities of children’s day. REV. LUDWIG stray domestic animals and enRev. Ludwig explained that it was difficult to decline this important overseas assignment, but that he feels his basic training and inclination has been today parish work rather than in the educational field. Rev. Ludwig was installed as Zion’s pastor February 1, 1959. The congregation has experienced a steady growth both in membership and attendance during the past several years and has expanded its parochial school. Next year the school will have seven grades: and four teachers. The congregation has a long term building program which includes plans for a new larger church since each of its two worship services on Sunday is frequently filled beyond normal capacity. The Zion board of vestry recently passed a resolution urging Rev. Ludwig to stay in Decatur, pointing out the continued opportunities for service available here, and pledged its suppor toward implementing that expansion program. Not that leva was spoken for by him alone. Paul speaks of love many a time, and indeed the moot famous chapter on love is
from Paul’s writings, not John’s. And of course Je- : sus gave the clue to both of them i when he summed up the whole of the Ten Commandments, the summary of God’s will for man’s life, in two com-

mandments: Love thy Ged, love thy neighbor. Sod te love However, others had spoken of love, and given It as a kind of Eleventh Commandment, or summary of all the Lew, it was left to John to My tomething which no one else, not even Jesus, had said: God to love. This is at tije same time profound and difficult, and also simple and dear. This is not a propositioa which can be turned end-for-end and stil be true. God is love; but love ie'i not God. Love, John says, is “of God” or “from God” as the New English Bible translate it That is, God is the source of all the love there is, here or in the farthest galaxies. Love is not something which human beings first discovered or invented, and then “thought-into” God. We do not' ascribe love to God; we find it there, in him. Now you might expect, somewhere in the Bible, to find similar statements, for instance that God is power, or justice, or joy. But no Bible writer over said it Wo can only thrust our thought in the direction in which that short sentence points, “God is love;’’ we cannot fathom or fully say what it finally means, But we may judge that love is a better word to express what God is, than those other words Power or Justice ar Joy or anything else. We may also dare to beHevo that love to God’s baste quality hte justice, his glory, his power, are midi as infinite and perfect tovw brings forth. AaA Im Perhaps it is wise to pat in something here which has often been said, but which seems to have escaped the notice of too many people. The word “tove* as John uses it (not to mention Paul and Jesus) to not sentimental It has nothing to do with hearMhrobs or spells of emotion. When the Emperor Titas one day at a public appearance granted a request made by a Roman Petitioner, a member of the eour* said to him afterwards, “Bow could your majesty promise the man what you did? It is not possible to keep that promise, to it?** “No,” the Emperor replied; “1 know it to not possible; but I did not want the man to go away disappointed.” That to kindliness; but it to not love. To take an opposite example, the family of a certain victim of polio went to some trouble not to help the boy. They just made him learn to help himself in spite of his handicap. Love, in short, to unselfish concern,—persistent, intelligent, working concern for others. It is a constant and consistent attitude rather than occasional outbursts of emotion. It to this that John means when he talks of “abiding” in love—living in it permanently, maintaining this attitude in spite of all discouragements. ■o raoa for tear You would expect John to contrast love and hate. They are a real contrast, but that to not what John brings out. There to no fear in love, he says. If fear and love seem to live together in the heart, John would say, that is a sign that the love to not perfect; if it were, tiie fear would vanish. This is not to say that love casts out fear in God—that would be an absurd remark, for a frightened God would bo no God at all. John is thinking of ouradves. He might •ven be thinking of oar situation in 1962. People are afraid, fear stalks around the globe. But people are afraid because they dp not trust God; and they do hot trust because they do not love. E some one asks, “But how eon I love God?" Be does hot need my helj\ he does not need any looking-., after. John would say fids to asking the wrong question first It to our fdlow-man who does nerd

You will enjoy the preaching services too Read your Bible daily. Have you accepted your invitation to the wedding in the sky? The time is still a secret but I feel its drawing nigh. The palace must be nearly ready, and the carpets being layed; I’m going to attend that wedding, my reservations have been made. When I received waves rolled over me like, a flood; it was penned in “JESUS” blood. I could see the bridegroom coming, to take away His bride; and all the saints that served Him, gathering closely to His side. Ever one is being invited, from the greatest to the least; but we all must wear robes of white, to attend the wedding feast. So don’t neglect this invitation, to the wedding in the sky. THIS WEEK’S BIBLE VERSE “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.” — I Thessalonians 5:9, 10.
