East German I Is Killed In Escape Effort BERLIN (UPD— A 24-year-old I East German was shot and killed I by Communist border guards to- I day when he attempted to crash I his way to . freedom in a speeding I gravel truck. West Berlin police s aid the ] truck was traveling about 60 I miles an hour when it careened I through the zig-zag obstacles I erected at the Heinrich Heine I crossing point on the American I sector border. Communist sentries immediate- ' ly opened fire and two bullets , struck the driver, Klause Brueske , who died slumped over the steer- ' Ing wheel. Brueske was accompanied by two friends in the dash ' for freedom, one of whom was ■ wounded in the shoulder. The cab of the truck was raked by five bullets. Brueske's two companions, who were rushed to a hospital, said he borrowed the truck on the pretext he was moving. Reaching the border at high speed, the truck managed to slither through the intricate barrier before crashing into the wall of a bombed-out building 250 ( yards inside the Western sector. , But by that time Brueske was dead. The incident took place at 11 a.m. at a crossing point on the 1 Berlin border reserved for West ] Germans. It was near the Friedrich Strasse crossing point for : foreigners. ' West Berlin police said the refugees loaded the truck with sand J to give it m ore force when it • slammed into the border barriers. In a suburban area on the border of the American sector district of Zehlendorf, Communist police shot down an East German soldier fleeing with another soldier. He was shot on the Eastern side of the border, but his comrade made it safely to the U.S. sector.
