PROPERLY PLANNED LANDSCAPING contributes to the attractive appearance of this Thermopane glass-walled suburban home. Shrubs, trees and flowers can also help gain backyard privacy in crowded residential areas. Formed into a "landscape unit," they shield neighboring property to provide a pleasant background for the lawn or patio while insuring a controlled view from the house.

It will include a tiny dish cupboard, two small utensil drawers, and a shelf under the counter top for small electric appliances. of family cookouts, informal entertaining and just relaxing in the fresh air. Homemakers find the garden a welcome retreat from household chores, a valuable outlet for their "green thumb’’ talents and a convenient place for picnic-style din-
mounting it on coasters, and it’s equally useul indoors, at the dining table? Tmish the Douglas fir with tough waterproof clear plastic ; lacquer available at a good paint shop. ■ Fascinating Entry ( You can develop an exciting in- ' door-outdoor theme in your entrance hall by paneling one or more walls with western red cedar siding to match the exterior house walls. Whatever pattern has been used on the exterior of the house will work equally well inside, whether it is bevel, drop siding, tongue-and -grove, or board-and-batten. It can be rough-sawn siding or. smooth surfaced. Hani Tap Clear varnish and plastic lacquer are excellent finishes for west coast hemlock and western red cedar wall paneling. These hard finishes are preferred when protetion is needed against nicks and fingerprints, such gs in children’s rooms, the kitchen, and for cabinetwork. To eliminate gloss, buff ( lightly with very fine steel wool. Avoid Pattern If you wish to avoid the wild, distinctive grain pattern present in many panel woods, choose panel boards in a vertical grain softwood like west coast hemlock or Douglas fir. - - • - ' <T-- . I ‘Supermarket’ In Kitchen Cuts Costs How much does a trip to the supermarket cost? Much more than the total shown on the sales tape, says Dr. Helen G. Canoyer, dean of the New York State College of Home Economics. Dr. Canoyer warns that there are hidden costs, not only in cash, but in time and energy, involved in supermarket shopping. Costs counted by Dr. Ca- 1 noyer include travel to and from the store—the wear of extra mileage on the car and tires as well as the gasoline used. She also adds up the energy sapped by rounding up the youngsters and readying them, finding a parking space, searching for the right items, and waiting in the check-out line. No one wants to eliminate the efficiencies and pleasures of supermarket shopping, which Dr. Canoyer compares to shopping in the general store of an earlier era. But the wear and tear can i be minimized by careful planning of meals and shopping lists, Dr. Canoyer explains. Many homemakers find that with a large electric refriger-ator-freezer in the kitchen, they can plan their supermarket purchases so that one weekly shopping trip is all that’s needed. Since today’s electric refriger-ator-freezers, in addition to holding generous amounts of food, have special compartments to keep various foods at the right temperature and humidity for best retention of flavor and quality, they serve much like supermarkets at home. It is possible for today’s homemaker to save many of the costly hours she previously spent on shopping trips if she plans carefully and keeps her own “supermarket”—a modern electric refrigerator-freezer —well stocked.
ners. This impetus on landscaping has stemmed to a great extent from the open style of today’s homes, points out Ralph Serwin, chief designer, Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company. “With Thermopane sliding patio and garden an outdoor part of the house, it is a definite asset to have plantings which enhance the overall setting,” he said. “Not only does the landscaping and to the view from the house, but it is surprising what a difference sliding glass detors and colorful gardens can make in the apparent size ot even the smallest home. Rooms become brighter and appear more spaciuos.” But landscaping has value beyond the beauty it provides, the designer points out, and foremost it its ability to provide privacy and create a pleasing view when one is lacking. By carefull.V selecting trees and shrubs with an eye to the cover they will provide and then planting them as a backdrop for flower beds, it becomes a relatively simple matter to screen a patio or garden from surrounding property while creating a pleasant scene to view from the house. This idea of custom building the landscape is borrowed from the Japanese who use intricate fences and dense foliage to gain privacy
Careful Packing Will Insure Mirror’s Safety In Move To New Home
With fine weather the signal for many families to make the longawaited move into new home, chances are that the lady of the house will be in for more than her share of packing. Although the movers will hndle the heavy work, it most families it usually becomes a woman’s job to supervise and personally execute most of the packing, especially of such items as dishes, cooking utensils, lamps, mirrors and other prized possessions which often find their way to their new quarters in the family car. When it comes time to move that prized mirror, here are some suggestions from Roy Anderson, plate glass specialist of Libbey—OwensFord Glass Company. 1. First of all, don't try to take large mirrors down from the’wall by yourself. Get help. 2. Wrap the mirror in paper, or

in their crowded housing conditions. “Now, by using much the same idea. American homeowners can accomplish the same end result and much at the Work can be done as a do-it-yourself propect for home gardeners," the designer went on. “If you like, you can start with a fence as a background for the plantings and work from there. This wfll assure a certain degree of cover even before Jhe shrubbery has begun to attain its growth." To the woman of the house who is usually responsible for much of the landscape planning, Mr. Sherwin advises contacting a landscape architect who can recommend the flowers and bushes to use. By doing this before starting to plant, costly errors can be avoided and you can be assured of getting varieties which will grow high and thick enough to provide the desired effect. For example, a living fence of roses gives a fairly open hedge which provides color for a Long period of time while evergreens, although less striking, will provide year-round color. Other popular hedge choices include Chinese Elm Littleleaf Boxwoods, Japanese Quince, Winged Euonymus and Dogwood, with forsythia, lilac, spirea and rhododendrons providing flowering hedges which many times require little or no pruning.
better still, a blanket, making sure that both die front and back surfaces are well protected. Scratches on the front will impair the fine polish of the plate glass, while on the back they may damage the reflective coating. To stand die mirror up, rest it on one edge in shift. 3. For unusually large framed mirrors (those too big and heavy to be handled safely by inexperenced hands) it’s best to leave the actual transporting to trained movers. If the mirror will fit comfortably into the car, though, lay it flat on the, back seat, making sure it is protected against shifting in the event of a sudden stop. It isn’t a good idea to lay a mirror on edge between the seats because of the uneven contour of the floor. If you are using a station wagon, lay the mirror flat on the deck with plenty of padding underneath. Do not risk placing anything heavy on top of the glass. 4. Before mounting the mirror against in its new location, test the strength of the hangers and wire on the frame. A Parallel-O-Plate mirror weighing less than 35 pounds can be hung with twinstrand wire over two wall brackets four inches apart. If heavier, use loops of twin strand wire over mirror hangers an equal distance apart on the wall. Test carefully to see that the wall* brackets are firmly embedded and capable of securely holding the mirror’s weight which will approximately 4 pounds for each square foot of glass, plus an additional amount in the case of heavily framed types. There’s such a great variety of room air conditioners on the market today—with a wide range of cooling capacities and special features—that a family will have no problem meeting their particular cooling needs. If a model isn’t in stock, preseason shopping allows the dealer plenty of time to order it from the supplier. Buy Btrt The first step in selecting a room air conditioner is to determine the needed cooling capacity. To do this, a home owner provides his appliance dealer with a few facts: the size, location, and use of the area to be cooled; number of windows and which direction they face, and whether electric circuits are 115, 208, or 230 volte. With this information, a dealer can find the cooling capacity needed in terms of Stu’s.
