Boston Celtics Win Over Philadelphia BOSTON (UPD-WUt Chamberlain’s strange record of never playing for a winner, and Bill RusseU’s equally odd mark of never playing for a loser are still intact—but barely so. It took a last second basket by guard Sam Jones to preserve both of those streaks Thursday night and propel the Boston Celtics into the final stage of their bid for an unprecedented fourth straight National Basketball Association championship. The Jones basket gave Boston a 109-107 victory over the Philadelphia Warriors and means the Celtics open a best-of-seven championship series wih the Los Angeles Lakers here on Saturday afternoon. The two teams wiU shift to the West Coast for two games after Saturday’s nationally televised match and another game on Sunday afternoon at Boston Garden. Thursday night’s 109-107 Boston win meant that the Chamberlian led Warriors have never beaten the Russell-paced Celtics in a title series. Just Misses Block Chamberlain was held to 22 points by RusseU Thursday night but the cold figures did not teU a true tale of the tall Warrior’s game. He had 22 rebounds and was immense in blocking shots. In ract, he barely missed blocking the settling shot, and had personaUy scored five points to lift Philadelphia from a 107-102 last minute deficit On the winning play, Chamberlain had an impossible choice. With time running out and the score tied, he was with Russell under the PhUadelphia basket. If he moved to block the Jones shot RusseU would be open tor a pass. He chose to play halfway and that was the game, the series, and another step in the peculiar ChamberlainrßusseU record. Coach Rapa Officiating Philadelphia coach Frank McGuire was incensed over an offiqjpting call which charged Chamberlain with goal-tending on a Tom ’ Heinsohn shot with 1:25 remaining. McGuire said, “Those goal-tending calls (three in all) lulled us. How could they call it like that? It’s a crime to lose a ball game on a terrible caU like that. My guys played their hearts out only to lose it on a bum call.” In scoring, Sam Jones had 28, Heinsohn 25, Bob Cousy 21 and Russell 19 for Boston. Tom Meschery topped both clybs at 32 whUe Paul Arizin had 19 and Guy Rodgers 18 behind Chamberlain’s 22.

No Request Made To Cancel Gaines Concerning the story on the county tourney which appeared in Tues day's Daily Democrat, it was learned this morning that officials of Berne high school did not request their season games with Pleasant Mills and Hartford be dropped from the schedule. The story, concerning the dropping of the Berne team from the county meet, and the future of the tourney, said that Berne had requested they be released from their contracts with Pleasant Mills and Hartford, in order to enable them to play in the annual county affair. Apparently, however, this was just a tentative idea by Berne school officials. Robert Baumgartner, principal of Pleasant Mills high school, said this morning that Berne “had never asked his school to release them from their season game.”— -**— Winners Listed In Shuffleboard League E.
