Yankees Look Like Class Os League Again (EDITORS NOTE: This is another of 20 dispatches on the 1062 prospects of the major league baseball cluba). By LEO H. PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (UPI) — The New York Yankees may be having trouble with Roger Maris, their home run king, but it’s likely to be more trouble than they will have in winning another American League pennant this season. For the Yankees look like the class of the league again. They may be concerned with Maris’ feud with the press, radio and television — but on the field they look like the Yankees of old. And that’s pretty good. “Roger will be all right,” insists Manager Ralph Houk, who took over for Casey Stengel after the 1960 season and led the Yankees to the pennant and World Series title in his freshman season. “So will the Yankees — with or without Tony Kubek.” Kubek, the Yankees star shortstop, is in the Army. It’s doubtful whether he will get out in time to play at all this season. “I’m not counting on him,” says Houk, “but I am counting on Maris. I don’t expect him to hit 61 home runs again, but I’ll l be grateful for everyone he hits. I’m not at all worried about him.” Counts On Rookies Houk agrees with other American League managers who say the Yankees will miss Kubek. He has two rookies battling for the job, however, and feels certain whichever one wins it will be a capable replacement for Kubek. Those rookies are Mike Tresh, who hit .315 at Richmond and Phil Linz, who batted .239 at Richmond and then .347 with Amarillo. “All I can say is that both of them will be with the club on opening day and that one of them will be out there.” Houk says. “Both have been impressive.” If either one makes it, the Yankees will have no infield worries. For Moose. Skowron, who hit 28 homers and drove in 89 ruijs last year, will be back on first; steady Bobby Richardson at second and Cletis Boyer, the fjekiing demon at third. That leaves 7 the veteran

Billy Gardner for Infield utility duty. Should Tresh or Linz fail to make the grade, Boypr would je switched to shortstop with Gardner or Hector Lopez taking over third. Either of two rookies, Jake Gibbs, the high price bonus baby who hit .270 at Richmond, o Pedro Gonzalez, who Mt .266 with the same club, may stick but the chances are both will be sept out for more seasoning. Berra fn Left If Lopez is not needed for third he probably will be platooned with the veteran Yogi Berra in left field. Berra will be 37 in May, but he showed no signs of slowing up last season when he Mt 22 home runs and batted in 61 with an average of .271. There are many who insist that Berra is the best clutch Mtter on the club. Mickey Mantle will, of course, be in Mgris in right. Mantle hit .317 in.W 54 homers and 128 RBl’s; Maris’ average was only .269 but these 61 home runs and 142 RBl’s attest to his power. Jack Reed, a fine fielder but light Mtter, and the veteran Bob Cerv may be kept for outfield utility duty. Elston Howard, who batted .348 last season with 21 homers and 77 RBl’s, will be the No. 1 catcher with Johnny Blanchard behind him. Blanchard Mt .305 last season, but rapped out 21 homers, many of them as vital pinch hits, and drove in 54 runs. He would be the No. 1 catcher on almost every other club in the league. Versatile Players Both Howard and Blanchard can play the outfield or first base, if necessary. No team has so many players who can play two or three positions and play them well as do the Yankees. Berra, for instance, was the best catcher in the league for yeate before

going to the outfield. Whitey Ford (25-4), Bill Stafford (144), Ralph Terry (164) and Roland Sheldon (11-5) will be the big four starting pitchers with Jim Coates (U-5) and Bud Daley (12-17) available for spot starting assignments and relief. Luis Arroyo (15-5) will be the king of the bullpen. That leaves only three pitching spots open. One of them may, go to Bob Turley, who was sidelined by injury most of last season and won only three games while losing five. Houk has been pleased on what Turley has shown this s pring. Should he regain Ms old form, he would have to be fitted into the starting rotation. Coates and Marshall Bridges, obtained from the Cincinnati Reds where he had a 0-1 record in 1961, are bullpen possibilities behind Arroyo. Daley also will be used iJjClooks SSe the Roberts, foe ex-PMllies great, may have reached the end of the road, but Houk says he will give Mm every chance to make the club.
