er bed and swath of green fawn becomes more and more limited. The switch, according to Barbara feal}, OSLA, prominent landscape architect of Portdand,
Oregon, results from a re-evalu-ation of the yard. While our forebears wanted a park-like yard to look at, the modern family needs a garden designed for living as well as looking. When planning a livable yard for your home, it’s wise to begin with paper and pencil, advises the landscape architect. Jot down all the things you need and want for your yard beginning with uses, then noting methods of achieving those end uses. For example when creating an outdoor living area for your garden, perhaps you find privacy a problem. In that case, you should begin your yard development with a fence to provide your home with the needed sanctity. Don’t fear using a high estate type of fence, for they can be utterly charming with the right kind of design. One idea is to use a series of overlapping screens for the fence to avoid the straight-lined rigidity of most perimeter fences. The screens can be built with Ix 2 strips of western red cedar spaced a quarter inch apart to give the fence a delightfully airy appearance. The Ix2s are nailed to a frame of 2x4s, using cedar 4x4s as posts. A pattern of vertical louvers is another excellent design forth e high fence. The louvers are simply cedar Ix6s set vertically at a 45 degree angle between a top and bottom 2x6 rail. It’s an easy style to build and is, again, surprisingly open and airy in effect. The privacy fence, whatever its style will be the more lovely if it is used as a backdrop or foil for greens massea at its base. With a shrubs that require little care and are slow-growing can be found for the fence line. I Another good trick for blending • the fence into the landscaping and making it more lovely, according to Landscape Architect Fealy, is to let the cedar weather out instead of painting or staining it In a season or so, the fence will become a magnificent silver shade which compliments perfectly the greens and flowers in your garden. Miss Fealy also suggests that, to,

Once the prtvary problem has been solved, the yard development can continue. little by little as time and budget permit. A handsome wood patio for comfortable outdoor lounging is generally the second most-needed item on the list. This can be attached to the house in deck style or set in a corner of of a yard wnere, with the addition of a roof or arbor-like canopy, it becomes a summer house or gazebo. Pergolas, garden benches, and tool houses are other structures to consider adding to your yard. Each will contribute added livability and put a plus mark on the beauty side. ■ Neighbors Like Fence Planning Home owners can build neighborhood good will by cooperative planning of fence designs. Harmonious fence styles can be worked out to set the tone of the neighborhood and to njjet the requirements of each home owner.. The main thing, says Portland landscape architect Chandler Fairbank, who has had outstanding landscaping projects, is to avoid clashes in size or texture of wood fencing. . The variety of wood fences is endless, Fairbanks points out. There is a fence for every need, whether it is for containment, for decoration, for boundary identification, for privacy, or for visual or noice shields. A good fence, Fairbank advises, can bring out the best features of a home, like a frame does for a picture. Aesthetic qualities are important in a fence. Fences may be formal, informal, rustic, elaborate, costly or inexpensive. You can build them, Fairbank suggests, of almost any kind of durable wood which is stocked by your retail lumberman. Some popular species widely available are Douglas fir and western red cedar. Fairbank gave an indication of the choice available to home owners in fence designs as he enumerated such popular styles as picket. stretcher, or rail, backetweave narrow slat, louvered vertical! boards, board fence with ladder es-

Smart builders across the country put little extra features in the kitchen which are sure to attract the attention of the woman buyer. One feature which delights the homemaker’s heart, says a Portland builder, is an all-wood kitchen. “You should hear them explain,” he says, “when they walk into one of these charmers. “There is warmth and friendliness in wood,” he points out, “and we make the most of it We try to select light colored woods such as west coast hemlock or Douglas fir, and then we finish the wood with clear plastics to get the full impact of their natural golden coloring and their incomparable texture and grain. “These two woods,” the builder pointed out, “we call the glamour woods because they have so much elegance and charm, and yet they are relatively inexpensive.
