THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR, INDIANA
Labor’s Scrap May Weaken Influence
INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Dissension among laborites may weaken their influence in the Indiana Democratic senatorial contest. Ordinarily, the hard-core labor delegate strength at a Democratic state convention is about 15 per cent, but hundreds of other delegates often have been persuaded to line up with the candidate favored by organized labor on the argument that heavy big-city voting is necessary for a Democratic triumph. This year, however, we have James Robb, head of the Indiana Steelworkers Union strongly backing Indianapolis Mayor Charles H. Boswell, and Dallas Sells, president of the Indiana AFL-CIO, just as fervently denouncing Boswell as a hidebound conservative. Sells For Bayh? The inference is that Sells may support Boswell’s chief rival, former House Speaker Birch E. Bayh, Terre Haute, for the nomination. There are two other announced aspirants—Marion Mayor M. Jack Edwards and Appellate Court Judge John S. Gonas, South Bend. Sells said that Bayh has been endorsed for senator by the 3rd and 10 District Committees for Political Education of the AFLCIO and the Delaware Oounty Council of that organization. Robb has publicly challenged any opponent of Boswell to prove that the Indianapolis mayor has “ever voted for, or even advocated, any type of anti-labor legislation.”
OldTimeCookßook Has Hours Os Work
By HORTENSE MYERS United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Any modern housewife who feels she is overworked may find a quick cure by scanning an item treasured by women of another century — the Martha Washington Cook Book. A recipe for keeping eggs fresh, jn a time of no refrigeration, calls fCr the homemkker rel of “common, fine-ground land plaster down to the cellar, accumulate a number ot wooden containers, holding from 10 to 20 gallons each, and canfidljr peek away fresh-laid eggs, small end down without touching, in layers of the plaster.” Potato soup was no little matetr of opening a can or heating a fastfrozen preparation. The cook was told to begin by getting “as many beef or ham bones as you can and smash them to fragments.” Give It Flavor “Add a little bit ot lean ham to give flavor. Boil the bone and ham for two hours and a half at least. Strain off the liquor carefully and place again on the fire. Add some nice potatoes cut into small pieces and boil them until they melt away. Strain through a hair sieve and place again on the fire, seasoning it with salt and pepper,” the recipe said. Another for fricasseed eels directs tiie cook to “skin, clear and cut five or six eels into pieces of two inches in length, boil them in water nearly to cover them, then add a good-sized bit of butter with a teaspoon of wheat flour or rolled cracker worked into it, and a wine glass of vinegar. Let simmer for 10 minutes and serve hot." Another is for corned beef, which the cook book assures the reader “will keep for years.” “Cut up a quarter of beef,” it begins. “For each hundredweight take a half peck of coarse salt, quarter of a pound of saltpetre, the same weight of saleratus, and a quart of molasses.” This goes by layers into a barrel. How To Trim Wicks The cook book, once a treasured possession of a pioneer Marion County family, also contains directions for smoothing a sad iron and trimming lamp wicks. It went also into medical matters with information that would make a modern doctor wince. Unaware that a later generation would call colds incurable, it contains “a good cure for odds.” “Boil two ounces of flaxseed in one quart of water, strain and add two ounces of rock candy, one-half pint of honey, juice of three lemons, mix and let all boil well.” The book also offered “a cure for drunkenness.” “Pulverize one pound of fresh quill-red Peruvian bark, and soak it in one pint of diluted alcohol,” it said. “Strain and evaporate down to one-half pint.” This suggested that seven days of dosing “will cure average cases.” A modern reader suggested no drunk in his sober mind would swallow the concoction. > 11 j"Faded Handwriting Faded handwriting on any old paper can be restored by moistening the paper and brushing over with a solution of sulphohydric amnonia.

Robb also charged that Sells and some Republicans have conspired to check the candidacy of Boswell. “Apparently, t his was an attempt to bring pressure on the governor to support some other , candidate on the premise that organized labor in Indiana would not support Boswell,” Robb said. Boswell Like GOP? Sells previously had alleged that Boswell has opposed many of the liberal proposals of President Kennedy and Governor Welsh. Along the same line, Sen. Homer E. Capehart, the Republican incumbent seeking reelection, has stated that Boswell should be campaigning against him for the GOP nomination because they agree on numerous right - wing measures. Sells announced that on June 21, the day before the Democratic state convention, the AFL-CIO Committee for Political Education will meet in Indianapolis to “discuss and probably determine whom to support.” He predicted that the majority would prevail. Some observers believe that the > fracas among the laborites may I promote the entrance of another senatorial candidate or a decision by Welsh to adopt a hands-off policy in the senatorial struggle. Roger D. Branigin, Lafayette, ! former president of the Indiana l State Bar Association, as usual, i has been named as a possibility, ' but he remains in his customary • role of the “reluctant dragon”, according to his friends.
Intriguing Issue For Congressmen By DICK WEST United Press International WASHINGTON (UPl)—One of the more intriguing issues to occupy the minds of our statesmen this year is whether the Navy should 'judge an officer's “fitness” by the social graces ot his wife. The Navy’s decision to start including marital as well as martial matters in its officer fitness ratings has aroused more than one congressman. By my count, it has aroused two congressmen. Rep. Leslie C. Arends ot Illinois ~ mounted the burning deck to assert that a Navy wife's looks, charm, manners and wit — or lack of same—were beside the point. •- “The value of a Navy officer is his ability to command a ship and not his wife’s ability to engage in sparkling conversation at a reception or a tea,” he said. It was, however, Rep. Samuel S. Stratton of New York, himself a naval reserve officer, wh ©contributed the most eyebrow-raising comment. He questioned whether “a superior officer is, or ever should be, in any position to comment usefully and intelligently on the qualifications and attributes of the wives of tiie officers under his command.” Stratton has a point there. It doesn't take much to start tongues wagging in a close-knit community like the Navy. All of this started me to wondering just what sort of thing an old seadog would write when he started to fill out the social section of a junior officer’s fitness report. My guess is that it would turn out something like this: “To: Bureau of Personnel. “From: Capt. Lungbuster. “Subject: Fitness of Lt. <jg) Frizbee. “Frizbee and wife make attractive couple, only drawback is that she is taller than he. She should wear flat-heeled shoes. Looks better then him wearing high heels. “Waltzed with Mrs. Frizbee at club dance. Steers okay on straightaway but has tendency to list to port or turns. Winces when foot stepped on but doesn’t stop in middle of floor and holler ‘ouch!’ Sign of good manners. “Drew Mrs. Frizbee as partner in club bridge tourney. Bids weak no-trump. Signals with kicks under table. Shouldn’t wear pointed shoes. “Attended cocktail party at Frizbee home. Martinis standard 3-to-l formula. Sign of stability but indicates tack of imagination. “Overall impression is that Mrs. Frizbee an asset socially. Recommend Frizbee for promotion.” Rocker Marta ' By waxing the bottoms Gt the rockers on your rocking chair, you will prevent any unsightly marks on your waxed or varnished floors.
