Joe Platt Says Kokomo Needs Luck To Win By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD— Coach Joe Platt .said today it wid take two great games “back to back” and some luck for Kokomo to retain its Indiana high school basketball tourney crown Saturday. For that matter, said Platt, the three other contenders must also be at their peak to go all the way

in the big Butler Fieldhouse showdown. Kokomo w ent into the monthlong grind with the state’s No. 1 ranking and as the top choice for the title it captured for the first time last year. The Wildcats had their first crucial tourney test in the Fort Wayne semi-state last Saturday, and it took a record 47-point performance by Goose Ligon to get them past Elkhart in the title game. “His scoring end board work were the best I’ve ever seen,” said Platt. The 6-7 veteran took only 31 shots and popped in 20 fielders. While Ligon is as strong or stronger than last year, the rest of the squad does not measure up to the 1961 quintet. Balance Despite Losses “You don’t lose boys like (Ronnie) Hughes, (Richie) Scott and (Dave) Cox and not feel the gap," said Platt. With Ligon the only holdover starter, Kokomo is weaker on defense and reserve strength than

last year, the veteran Platt said. Nevertheless, Kokomo has balance—the type of balance it needs to battle tough East Chicago Washington in the second afternoon game of the state finals. George Hawkins stands 6-5, Everett Trueblood 64, Jim Burt 6-2, Erwin Cox 6-1, Joe Kelly and Mike Hankins 6-0 and Eddie Eisert 5-9. "We’re just going out there and play our game,” said Platt. “I know they’re ell tough—this must be the greatest bunch we’ve ever had in the finals. Unbeaten Madison and Evansville Bosse are the two other title hopefuls. Ligon Stands Out “Whoever wins will be real fortunate and must put two great games back to back,” said Platt Ligon, who hit a record 53 points, a season clip of about 30 points and his three-year total of 1,875 eclipsed the 1959 mark of 1,632 by the prolific Jimmy Rayl, the No. 2 scorer in the Big Ten this season. Regardless how Kokomo fares Saturday, it’s been a remarkable season for Platt’s boys, who lost only at Lafayette in North Central Conference play and who check in with a sparkling 26-1 record after losing seven varsity players, including four starters, through graduation. Kokomo’s 23-game winning streak also is second only to Madison. which carries a 25-game string into the grand finale.
