Unique Pilot Program Set At Purdue In July LAFAYETTE, Ind.— A unique, pilot program aimed at interesting leading Indiana high school junior young men in careers in the speech and hearing sciences wiU be held on the Purdue campus July 9-13. Twenty-four scholarships for the week-long seseion will be awarded by the Beltone institute for hearing research. The project, believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, is aimed at filling a critical shortage of trained scientists and therapists in the fields of audiology, voice science and speech pathology, Dr. Mack D. Steer, director of the Purdue speech and hearing clinic, and program supervisor, BaidDeadline for filing appUcations is April 1. ' The pre-college institute wiU be conducted on an “on-the-job” basis with the students scheduled to follow the normal routine of a major in speech and hearing science, Dr. George Shaffer and T. D. Hanley, who are conducting the.program, announced. Dr. Shaffer is assistant director of the speech and hearing clinic and Dr. Hanley is the associate director of Purdue’s speech and hearing laboratories. The university already conducts a similar program on speech and hearing therapy, sponsored by Psi lota Xi sorority, for Indiana high school women. “There are about 5,000 jobs in the field which could be filled by men right now,” Dr. Shaffer declared. “The crying is for administrative people and a pool of qualified male students for graduate studies.” “Every Big 10 university needs at least one assistant professor in speech pathology and audiology,” he continued. ''Our program is slanted toward interesting young men in the research and administrative as well as therapy as* pacts of this growing field. Boys interested in engineering, electronics, the biological sciences, linguistics, psychology or many other careers can find their niche in speech and hearing. There is a very definite place in speech and hearing for men. It is sci-ence-oriented almost entirely,” he asserted. Hoosier high school juniors may apply for a Beltone scholarship for admission by contacting their high school principals or vocational counselors. Tbe24 selected for the. .program will attend morning lectures by Purdue professors on the many and varied opportunities open to ambitious young men with emphasis on the clinical, research and administrative skills acquired by persons who select the career. Afternoons will be devoted to learn-by-doing sessions in Purdue’s excellently-equipped speech laboratories. These will include hearing tests, tracing of breathing patterns, vocal cord pictures and instrument checks as well as other varied but pertinent activities. The one-week course also will include leisure time—classes will run from about 9 a. m. to 3 p. m. daily—with the bountiful recreational facilities of the Purdue campus available. Students will live in the men’s residence halls. High school students selected for the course, believed to be the first of its kind in the nation for young men, will have tuition, board and room paid by the Beltone institute for hearing research. Only spending money and transportation costs in Lafayette must be paid by individual students. Supply Firm Sues - — - Two State Officers INDIANAPOLIS (UP)—A food produce supply Jirm.. filed a $1.329,000 lib e 1 suit Monday against two state officials, charging them with conspiracy to destroy the firm's reputation by banning it from a list of authorized state bidders. The suit by Koehler’s Restaurant Supply Co. named as defendants James H. Berg, deputy commissioner in the State Department of Administration, and Ned Green, a state food buyer. The suit charged that Koehler’s was injured by publication of charges which resulted in the firm being denied the right to bid on furnishing supplies for state institutions. Attorney John D. Raikos asked Marion Circuit Judge John L. Niblack to order Berg and Green, to appear in court and show why Koehler’s should not be restored to the bidding list. A healing on Kaikds’ request was scheduled for today.
