Increase Rate On Indiana Toll Road INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Increased rates for passenger vehicles traveling the Northern Indiana Toll Road were approved Wednesday, effective April 1, and the commission which hiked them is studying a proposal to lower the “highest in the nation” rates on truck traffic. The Indiana Toll Road Commission bowed to a demand by bondholders that the toll rate schedule be revised upward to raise an additional $1,460,000 annual revenue. This means an increase from $2 to $2.80 for traveling the entire 256-mile route from the Ohio to the Illinois line and increases between all toll gates along the road except in Lake County. Increases for cars averaged 20 per cent but for some segments they were as nriuch as 40 per cent higher. Some typical increases were: From Angola to Howe-LaGrange interchange, from 30 to 40 cents. From Middlebury to Elkhart interchange, from 25 to 30 cents. From Elkhart to South Bend interchange, from 25 to 30 cents. From South Bend to LaPorte interchange, from 35 to 50 cents. Paul Conrad, representative of the toll road’s traffic engineering firm, told the commission in a meeting in Governor Welsh’s office that the Indiana rates for trucks are “the highest in the nation.” “We could improve the truck revenue if we could decrease rates,” he said.
