The Marine Questlonalre The Senate committee, investigating the alleged “muzzling” of “anti-Communist” speeches by the military recently made the news by the use of a questionaire to enlisted Marines on the subject of Communism. —- The questionaire was printed in full in the Congressional Record of Feb. 8. Gen. David M. Shoiip, eommanant of the U. S. Marine Corps, in a very pointed memorandum to the Secretary of the Navy, also included in the Congressional Record, made clear his feelings: 1. That the subcommittee’s visits to the Headquarters, Marine Corps, and other Marine posts had been very time consuming for general officers and colonels assigned to work with them. 2. That they serve no useful purpose — the Marine Corps has a properly charted course in the troop information field. 3. That the test Itself has no value, and is detrimental to the morale of those enlisted men asked to fill it in, and sign it with their name and rank. Some of the questions are as follows — perhaps the readers would like to answer them, and see how “patriotic” they are, in terms of the Senate committee’s questionaire! Name three designated subversive organizations. What is a front organization? Name three front organizations, and describe one. Is there a difference between a pacifist organization and subversive organization ? Is there any difference between a civil rights organization and a subversive organization? Describe. Name one pacifist organization and one civil rights organization. Is there any difference between a conservative organization and a Communist front group? Describe. Name your two State Senators, your representative, the President, Vice President, Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense. Do you agree with the saying — From each according to his needs? If not, why not? Approximately how many people live in the United States? In Russia? Communist China? Cuba? France? Who is George L. Rockwell How many nations have fallen to Communism since 1936? Identify the following individuals and terms: Fidel Castro, Patrice Lumumba, Moise Tshombe, Gus Hall, Karl Marx, V. I. Lenin, Frol Kostov, Das Kapital, Min-Se-Tung (?), Chinese Commune, presidium, brainwashing, the Worker, a publication, and ■— dWecticai mattotoifem. - —- This covers about half the questions — others pertained more to military things, such as do you have a copy of the code of conduct with you, Etc. How many of you can answer these questions, and how many of think very many average high school graduates can answer them? Theses on the doctorate level would not adequately cover many of the subjects mentioned. ’ ■ , ~ .1— — Editorial Writer Today Dick D. Heller, Jr.

Congressional Record Cost Is Increasing WASHINGTON (UPD—The Congressional Record, which purports to publish verbatim proceedings and debates of the House and Senate, is as much a part of the national capital scene as the Washington Monument. Only the monument isn’t getting
bigger evwry yw. The Record is growing hastily, and Rep. Paid C. Joies, a peppery Democrat from the bootheel country of southeastern Missouri, views it with alarm. The problem, as Jones sees it, is that the Congressional Record is getting so it tells you more of what is being said and done outside of Congress than in It. Coupling the steady increase In the size of the record with the fact that its production cost has just gone up from $Bl to S9O a page, Jones says: “We are spend-
ing more money to put out mopa useless information than ever before.” Last year, it cost mors than $2.5 million to print and distribute the 20,2 U pages of the Record proper and 8,435 pages of appendix that flowed down Capitol Hill to the government printing office. That is an increase of 6,000 pages of Record and 1,000 pages of appendix in 10 years. This year, Jones believes, the Record again will increase in cost and decrease in usefulness unless

reforms are adopted. But Jones has few supporters, aven among the most vocal economy advocates in the House. He began his campaign some years ago, and says his following is no larger now than when he began. Trade in a good town — Decatur.
