And then an article wakes us up with a rude shock. This week the editor read an article on the universe by Dr. JJ. Nassau, of Case Institute of Technology. He explained some staggering concepts. Most of us know that the earth tea part of the solar system, with eight or nine planets going around the sun. A few realize that the solar system tea part of a larger galaxy, which we see at night as the Milky Way. But the universe itself is an aggregate of billions of such galaxies, each containing a billion stars like our sun. I These galaxies are receding away from us at nearly half the speed of fight. Recently, Dr. Minkowski of Mt. Paloraar observatory observed what may be two colliding galaxies. This was seen and photographed on earth in 1960; but it actually occured 6 billion years ago, perhaps two billion years before the earth itself was created. The object was moving away from us then at a speed of 90,000 miles a second — almost four times around the earth in one second! Had it been traveling twice as fast, it would have been invisible, because it would have been moving as fast as light itself. With a billion billion stars in the universe, scientists now consider it quite likely that there are other planets much like earth inhabited by similar creatures. In fact, Dr. Frank Drake, of the National Radio Observa- ; tory, is training his radio telescope on nearby stars to discover if we can establish communication with other intelligent creatures. The problem that distance and time create in such an experiment seems almost unbelievable, except that it te actually happening. Here we are > talking about 6 billion light years of and sometimes the six-mile township boundaries seem almost insurmountable to us! 1.9 Editorial Writer Today Dick D. Heller, Jr.
