Lillie Chats an Public Notice By James E. Pollard “On and After This Date** (No. 24 in a Series) A lot of human nature underlies many kinds of public notices. Someumes there is a happy event which ca.lls for an announcement. Then again, there may be an undertone of trouble or human conflict buried in the notice. A fairly common notice of the latter is where a person gives notice limiting the —debts—lotwhich he will accept responsibility: One form reads: “On and after this date I will not be responsible for any debts other than those contracted by myself.” Or a specific person for whose bills the signer denies future responsibility after the date given, may be named in the notice. Most often such notices are used where husband and wife have difficulty and the former wishes to prevent the latter from running up further bills on him Sometimes, however, a minor child may be involved or someother legally incompetent person In any case, this type of notice has a dual purpose. It puts the person who places the notice on record as to his stand in the matter, ano it warns creditors that they will entend further credit as their own risk to all other persons indicated. Since it would be difficult to warm all creditors personally, the notice in the newspaper of general circulation is used to give such notices wide circulation. This is provided for by law. Although there is some disagreement on whether the notice is absolutely binding. • ■ . 20 Years Ago I Today • <j Feb. 6, 1942 — There were $2,250.50 in United States defense bonds and savings stamps sold in the rural schools of Adams county .during January. , , . The auditing department of the Cloverleaf Creomeries, Inc., has been transferred from Decatur to Huntington. More than 150 dairy farmers attended a night dairy short course at the Adams county garage. Two more Allied tankers have been sunk by German submarines in the Atlantic The Monroe Bearkatz defeated Monroeville, 37-25. • I Modern Etiquette I By Marta Ln * Q. Whenever I bring a girl home from a date, I don't know whether to kiss her goodnight in my car or at her door. Will you advise me? A My vote is for the door. People frown upon young couples who sit for all hours in parked cars, and it you have any respect for the reputation of your girls, you won’t linger for too long in the car when you bring them home. Q. Some of the fellows in the off ice. where I work have been kidding me for having failed to pass out cigars recently when my wife gave birth to our first baby. Was I guilty of poor manners? A.“N6,“itotexaHry“p6brrhanners. Hie giving out of cigars is just an old. widespread American custom —and I think it’s a nice one. Q. Is one supposed to leave the spoon in the sherbet glass after one has finished eating this dessert? ' ‘ . - A. No; place the spoon in the saucer under the sherbet glass.

Injunction Suit On Factory Withdrawn INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — The Glass Bottle Blowers Association of America has withdrawn an injunction suit in which it sought to prevent,, the shutdown of the Ball Brothers Co. glass-making plant at Muncie. Officials of the union announced the action Saturday and said they requested dis missal of the suit by Judge S. Hugh Dillin in Federal Court here. They said they initiated the suit because the firm had refused to discuss the possibility of transferring Muncie workers to other Ball Brothers plants. About 600 persons will be affected by the shutdown which company officials said last month was necessary because the plant was operating inefficiently. The announcement said the company and the union have agreed to discuss severance pay and transfer rights of workers who will lose their jobs in the shutdown. The firm owns several other glass - making plants in other states, but it will continue to, maintain its headquarters and research laboratories in Muncie where it has been located fdr the past 75 years. The company is one of the chief producers of jars used by housewives for home canning. If you have something to sell or trade — use the Democrat Want ads — they get BIG results.
