Yellow Jackets Edge Portland Panthers In Overtime Tilt, 76-72
By Pete Reynolds The Decatur Yellow Jackets, after watching a big fitst quarter lead go down the drain, then seeing themselves trailing by eight points after three quarters of play battled back to defeat the Portland Panthers, 76-72, in an overtime session Friday night at the Decatur gym. It was Decatur’s 12th triumph in 17 starts on the season. The Jackets romped away to a 14-point advanage in the first quarter, but Portland cut this to eight, 22-14 at the end of the period. Decatur’s attack was led by Bob Walters, who canned five field goals. The Panthers, trailing by 10 points midway through the second period, suddenly caught fire and finally pulled into a 37-37 tie with 15 seconds to play. Al Townsend’s two-pointer gave the Jackets a shaky 39-37 advanage at the halftime intermission. Walters’ sixth field gave Decatur a 41-37 lead opening the third quarter, but a free throw by Dave Bennett and a three-point play by Pete Fleming knotted the teams at 41-41. His foul shot came on Walters’ fifth personal and when the Decatur forward protested the call too vehemently, a technical also was called. John Coldren dropped in that free throw and Portland led for the first time. The Panthers built their margin to eight points, 59-51 at the end of the quarter. After three minutes of the final stanza, Fred Frauhiger grabbed a rebound to score and the Jackets were back in a tie at 63-63 Portland’s Joe Freeman and Flemming combined to put the visitors back on top at 67-63, but a three-point play by Denny Bollenbacher cut the Decatur deficit to one point. Coldren’s foul toss put Portland ahead again by two, but Bollenbacher’s two-pointer with a minute to go knotted the count a 68-68. Neither team could score in the final 60 seconds, sending the game into overtime. In the first 10 seconds of the extra session, Bollenbacher worked underneath for a layup and added a free throw for a 71-68 lead. With 1:16 to go, Bolly drove under for another bucket. He was fouled on the shot, missed the free throw, but Ron Kleinknight grabbed the rebound to score for a 7568 bulge. Freeman hit a pair of free throws with a minute to go but Eichnauer dropped in a foul toss. Freeman's last second basket cut the final score to 76-72. Ike Eichenauer topped with 21 points, Bollenbacher counted 17 and Walters 12. Freeman leading scorer of the game with 29 points. Fleming added 18 and Coldren 12 for the Panthers. Forty-two fouls were called, 24 on Portland and 18 on Decatur, with the Jackets losing Walters on fouls and the Panthers Fisher and Hutchins The Yellow Jackets travel to Elmhurst tonight to meet the Trojans in a Northeastern Indiana conference tilt.

Three 16-game winners—Whitewater Twp. (Franklin County), Eminence and Eastern—bit the dust for the first time along with 14-game winner Shawswick. And another “untouchable”— Ireland—risks its 16-game skein against powerful Evansville Rex Mundi tonight. Whitewater lost at home to Alquina, 63-62: Eminence got it in a real barn-burner from Wabash Valey tourney champ Ellettsville, which made its record 21-1, 76-74; Eastern lost at Peru in overtime; 54-52, on Jerry Bradley’s fielder and a free throw by Danny VanTreese, and Spencer caught Shawswick, 70-62. The unbeaten winners were high-ranking Madison, North Caston and Tunnelton. Cubs Down Seymour Third-rated Madison won at Seymour, 69-66, to run its regularseason string to 57, its 1961-62 skein to 16. North Caston remained the state’s winningest quintet this year, clubing Aubeenaubbee, 57-43, for No. 19. And Tunnelton dumped Hardinsburg, 98-56, for No. 16. Southport, No. 7 in the state, rolled over Columbus, 7047, for its 15th consecutive triumph and at least a share of the South Central Conference title. Unranked Alexandria drubbed Wabash, 74-52, for its first Central Conference crown in nine years, and Mitchell downed Austin, 61-50, for honors in the Mid-Southern Conference.
