Pheasant Facts For those who listened, the facts were quite conclusive concerning the desirability of raising and releasing pheasant at state cost, a subject discussed at length Wednesday night at Adams Central. The facts were plain. The three game farm operations were running better than $600,000 a year. In 1960 they released 66,000 pheasant; this past season more than 125,000 were released, the largest number ever. During the year that 66,000 pheasant were released, the total number killed in Indiana was 107,000 birds — wild and game-farm-raised. This estimate is based on the number of return cards distributed, the percentage returned, and the total number of hunters. Certainly 1,500 seems like a high figure for Adams county, but that is what it would figure out. If all the pheasant raised on the game farms were finally harvested by hunters, they would comprise only 10% of the actual kill. If only 10% were bagged, then they would contribute only 1% of the kill. Actually, banding returns show that clubraised birds released at eight weeks of age gave a return of only 3.3% — so artificial propagation really acounted for only one-third of 1% of the kill — and that isn’t very much at all for the cost involved. Game populations fluctuate in spite of anything that man has so far devised. Weather and the type of agriculture practiced in any area are probably the biggest factors. Man can’t do much about the weather, bttt he can improve the habitat. That means more wild pheasant. And that is what every hunter really wants — more pheasant to hunt. Editorial Writer Today Dick D. Heller, Jr.

French Brace For Increase In Terrorism ALGIERS, Algeria (UPD— French authorities braced today for an increase in rightwing terrorism in reaction to President Charles de Gaulle’s reported new peace offer to the Algerian rebels. Informed sources in Paris said Thursday that De Gaulle had delivered to the Algerian rebel government an offer to let one of its number be the first premier of an independent Algeria if the rebels would agree to a quick end to the seven-year war. The rebel leadership is scheduled to meet in Tunis next weekend and conceivably could decide on an answer then. De Gaulle’s offer was reported to have been an ultimatum. The sources reported De Gaulle said if the rebels would not go along with an agreement France “shall be constrained to make an Algeria without you.” The name of Abderrhamane Fares, former president of the Algerian assembly now in a French prison for collecting funds for the Algerian rebels, was mentioned as possible premier. The Secret Army Organization (OAS), dedicated to keeping Algeria in French hands, was expected to react violently.' k= The organization, backbone of the rightwing settler resistance to De Gaulle, has declared its members would rather die than be ruled by the Moslem majority of Algeria.
