COMPROMISE—ThS Coast Calif, foghorn to divert its noise and permit Pacific Grove residents to sleep again. Monterey fishermen want it to stay its own noisy self, Studebaker, Union Start Negotiations SOUTH BEND, Ind. (UPD— State and federal mediators were hopeful today that a joint afternoon meeting between labor and management might bring some progress Toward settlement of a strike of 6.500 Studebaker-Packard Corp, employes. Indiana Labor Commissioner Hobert P. Butler said representatives of the company and the United Auto Workers met with the mediators for five hours Wednesday in a similar joint session. Butler said there was no agreement at Wednesday’s session, but added the mediators “are optimistic" about today’s session. He said the company and union officials were "re-evaluating their respective positions" in preparation fpr the meeting. f Meanwhile, officials of UAW Local 5 moved pickets away from a spur track leading into the plant. Company officials had charged Monday that pickets prevented a switch engine from leaving the plant to pick up two boxcars. The UAW local issued a statement saying it had a right to picket the track but made no attempt to interfere with the shipment of 16 carloads of coal into the plant. Company officials requested a court injunction restraining the local from preventing shipment of goods into or out of the plant. No action has been taken yet on the request. Mediators also scheduled talks today In connection with a strike of 450 UAW members at the Oliver Corp, plant here. The Oliver strike began Jan. 3, two days after the Studebaker-Packard workers left their jobs. Butler also announced settlement Wednesday of a contract dispute between the UAW and Rockwell Corp, at nearby Misha“nail down” an agreement next Tuesday between the UAW and Borg-Warner at Auburn.

Vaccination Helps Check Hog Cholera INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — Vaccination has helped check what may have been the most serious outbreak of hog cholera in Indiana in the past 10 years, state officials said today. Dr. David Smith, veterinarian in charge of the hog cholera eradication program, said “vaccination was the greatest single contributing factor in controlling the disease.” / --■ _ , Quick preventive measures limited the tot al loss of reported cholera cases in the state to about 20 per cej»t. On Sept. 23, the Indiana State Livestock Sanitary Board warned farmers that the Purdue Diagnostic Laboratory, private laboratories and practicing veterinarians reported a decided increase in numbers of cholera cases. Pointing out the threat of a “cholera year”, caused by a combination of decrease in vaccination and a tendency oa the part of the disease to be cyclic in its appearance, the Board urged farmers to have their hogs vaccinated immediately. 196 Cases Reported Smith said that 190 cases of cholera were reported to his office between September and December, involving 10,445 hogs of which an estimated 2,400 died. In October, about 59 cases were reported involving 4,688 animals of which 922 died. In November and December, about 14 cases were reported involving about 2,300 animals of which 700 died. Smith prefaced these figures by pointing out that they do not give a true picture of the seriousness of the cholera situation since only 19 counties made reports and ap> proximations had to be made where reports were incomplete. Kosciusko County reported 47 cases, Marshall 27, St. Joseph 15, Wabash 23, Hamilton 7, and Boone 21. Smith pointed out that the word “cases*’ can also be deceptive since it encompasses whole herds which may or may not be totally affected. Smith said there is no known cure for cholera and 95 per cent of the infected hogs die. A sick animal will die in seven to 10 days. Cholera is a virus and is easily communicated through contact. Addresses State Vets Next week, Smith will address the Indiana Veterinarian Medical Association at its 78th convention, on the subject of hog cholera. “Our ultimate goal is total eradication of the disease,” Smith said. Smith will outline to convention delegates the preventive measures that can be taken against cholera. Smith said that in 1961 a law was passed making it mandatory for farmers to report cholera cases. He said this law if strictly observed can save a herd from total eradication^" - I “Lucky I fed that feed we got in the Democrat Want Ads to only four chickens!"

I really enjoyed the week-end so much, and I want to thank you for having invited me. Please remember me to Mr. Barton. Sincerely, Shirley Griffin.” 1 Q. My son is 'to lie "married at seven thirty in the evening. What should he and the other men in the wedding party wear — tails or tuxedos? A. Either is correct.
