Indianapolis Mayor Enters Senate Race
INDIANAPOLIS (UPD-Indian-apolis Mayor Charles H. Boswell, predicting a Democrat will “retire Senator Capehart to his heavily subsidized farm” next November, formally announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for U.S. senator Saturday night. , ' Judging by the platform he proposed, the 52-year-old Boswell appeared to be a more cSnservative candidate than his chief Democratic rival, former House Speiker Birch E. Bayh Jr., Terre Haute. Other Democratic senatorial nomination aspirants to oppose Republican Sen. Homer E. Capehart this year are Marion Mayor M. Jack Edwards and Appellate Court Judge John Gonas of South Bend. — The announcement was made here at a meeting attended by several hundred persons including Frank M. McHale, former national committeeman. and 11th District Chairman Albert DeLuse, both of Indianapolis. Absences Noted Observers noted the absence of a number of other prominent Hoosier Democrats, possibly on the theory that “it’s too early to get committed for senator.” Included were Alex Campbell, Fort Wayne, national committeeman, who at first was billed as a speaker; Sen. Vance Hartke, former Gov. Henry F. Schricker and Governor Welsh, whose potent Statehouse patronage may well decide the party’s senatorial nominee. A number of fellow mayors from over the state, however, were present. Touching on foreign aid in his ■ speech, Boswell said, "I believe j in helping only those nations that actively support our fight against the ambitions of the Kremlin leaders.” Other conservative principles advocated by the mayor included: —Maintenance of a balanced federal budget and opposition to deficit spending. —Modern and revised tax and depreciation laws. —“Home rule” legislation to give local government more voice I in solving local problems. ... —New. industry ,and defense contracts for Indiana. —Relinquishing by the federal government of certain taxing powers to the state and local governments so that the local property tax can be reduced. Boswell also urged resumption of nuclear testing in the atmosphere “if it is needed to maintain our edge as the world’s strongest nation.” Seeks Independents Capehart, now seeking his fourth term, at various times has advocated nearly all of the programs suggested by Boswell, who has indicated he will campaign for support of independent voters. The importance of the independ-, ent voter was stressed by McHale in his remarks. The Boswell backers contend that he is the only Democratic leader who can carry vote-heavy Marion County and also minimize the “Indianapolis curse,” the prejudice of outstate Democrats against an Indianapolis aspirant.

; Valparaiso Couple I Are Killed In Fire VALPARAISO, Ind. (UPD—- . George H. Bowers, 59, who nearly . defeated House Republican leader I Charles A. Halleck in the 1958 . congressional elections, was killed , today in a fire which also claimed , the life of his wife. Bowers, a Democrat who missed beating Halleck in a 2nd II District congressional race by ■ scarcely 6.000 votes, and his wife. . Dorothy, 57, were victims of a fire • which swept their $20,000 home in ■ the suburbs of Valparaiso. i _ State police idetntified the victims. They said a fire alarm was telephoned to the Valparaiso operator by a male voice believed to be Bowers’. At the same time, the : operator told police, the man was 1 calling to his wife to get out of ' the house. Then the line went dead. | Firemen from Westville and Lib- ; ertyville departments were called , jto fight the flames, which broke out shortly after 1 a m. CST. Firemen found Bowers’ body near a bed. Two hours later, they j found the body of Mrs. Bowers >in the basement beneath the | master bedroom where she apparently fell when the floor collapsed. Sparks from a burning log in ■ the living room fireplace were blamed tentatively for the blaze. The Bowers home was located along U.S. 6 near Valparaiso. Bowers, generally unknown in state politics before 1958, waged a major campaign to unseat Hali leek, dean of the Indiana delegation in Congress where he has served since a special election in [ 1935. In the 1958 off-year election, his ! 6.141-vote loss was one of the | closest, if not the closest, margins by which Halleck ever won in the predominantly Republican district. Bowers ran against Halleck again in 1960 but did not make as 1 good a showing.

The 1962 IFYE’s are David Caldwell, Fayette county; George Loyd 111, Floyd county; Bill Brown, Clay county; Lyle Gohn, Fulton county: Ann Thompson, Grant county; and Nancy Smith, Whitley county. The following families of Adams county have been host families for inbound IFYE’s: Mr. and Mrs. William Griffith, Mr. and Mrs. William Kohne, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Moser and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Koeneman. Each year this IFYE program is financed by a campaign of this kind in the state from which the young people go. One-half of the $3,000 cast is paid by the National 4-H foundation, and the other $1,500 must be raised by contributions form Indiana people or organizations. To date, Indiana has sent 44 IFYE’s and has received 88 inbound IFYE’s who have lived with 321 families. —u—.— Low Weekend Toll In Indiana Traffic By United Press International Despite roads made hazardous for driving by snow and ice, Indiana recorded a relatively low weekend fatality coupt with only three persons killed in accidents. Television Wrecks Movie Star System By VERNON SCOTT UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD ( UPI) - Purposely or not, television has wrecked the movies’ cherished star system, just as it has raised havoc with other filmland sacred cows. Thanks to TV the word "star” in reference to a performer has become ‘downright ludicrous. In the salad days of flickers a star meant Mary Pickford. Doug Fairbanks, Rudolph Valentino. Even a score of years ago Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Gary Cooper were synonymous with stardom. Once an actor reached that ratified eminence — and it took years—he resented an untried newcomer being billed on the same screen as a star. But everybody is a star on television—like an army with no privates, captains or colonels. Just generals. Take Como Show Take the Perry Como show. 1116 TV blurb bills his program something like this: “The Perry Como Show, starring Perry Como. Co - starring Cosmo Carter, Gladys Glutz. Also starring Phoebe Phipps and the Tanglefoot dancers. With special guest star Maurice Mandlebaum.” The situation is even worse on dramatic "specials” where everyone but the assistant makeup man is a star. Consider the “stars” to be seen weekly in their own series. For instance John Ashley and Brian Kelly, a couple of clean - cut youngsters who star in “Straightaway.” When Gloria Swanson appeared with them a few weeks back it seemed ridiculous for them to get star billing while Gloria (superstar before they were born) had to settle for the "special guest” category. Television moguls deny the existence of a starless series. One of the top five shows, “Bononza,” boasts four regular

stars. Thus, movie screens are filled with co-stars, also stars and special guest stars. Those stars accepting bit parts (a forbidden term) or supporting roles (never, never!) are now “cameo stars.” If you’ve ever been caught in a mob scene by a TV camera don’t be ashamed .to tell your grandchildren you - once were a television star.
