Where screws tend to loosen, especially iri soft wood, a simple method of locking them is to drive a staple across the screwhead so that it rests in the screw slot. This will prevent its turning and working loose. —'—. ... ':... ■ . '' ' ? I have been invited to a bridal shower in honor of a good friend, but I have a previous commitment that will prevent my attending. Should I send a gift t 6 the shower? A. This is the proper and thoughtful thing to do. Q. Does a woman ever rise when a man extends his hand either to greet her or to bid her good-by? A. As a hostess, yes — bqt not otherwise, unless the man is an important personage or very elderly. Q. How does one introduce one's children to other persons? '"“Ik. You introduce your children TO friends, “Helen, this is my daughter, Susan,” and then to Susan, “Mrs. Carter.” Only if your daughter is married do you 1 give her last name, as, “Mr. Fox, this is my daughter 4 Susan Temple.” Q. When a young widow is marrying for the second time, does her father again perform the rite of giving her away? A. Yes, just as he did at her first wedding. And, of course, her family again assumes all the expenses of the wedding"— unless she perfers to meet them herself. Q. Are you supposed to place your knife on your plate when you have finished eating, even if you haven’t used the knife? A, It is not at all necessary to pick up any unused selverware.. Whoever clears the table should clear the surplus silver before serving the following course. Q. While I was confined in the hospital for several weeks? our neighbors were kind enough to bring my husband and children items 6< prepared food again what can I do to show my appriciation to these friends? A. The only thing you really have to do is to second your husband's 'thanks for their kindnesses. Q Whose duty is it to see that the bride and bridegroom's car is ready and waiting for them at the wedding reception? A. This is one of the duties of the best man. Q. Should the first page of a social letter be numbered? A. No; but you may number the succeeding pages if you wish. Firemen said damage was “extensive.” A barrel of hot tar exploded and touched off the fire in the threestory cold regions research and engineering laboratory one mite from the Dartmouth College campus. No one was reported injured. Estimate of the damage was not known immediately. The brick and stone structure was virtually completed last summer though some construction work still was under way. The facility employed 170 persons but Army officials said it was not fully staffed at the time of the fire. The blaze raged out of control for three hours. It was fought by firemen from four communities in two states, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Plans Enforcement Os Diesel Fuel Tax INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—lndiana plans to invest $15,000 with the expectation of getting it back with a lush profit in enforcing a widely disregarded diesel fuel use tax. The expenditure of $9,600 to hire four investigators on a temporary basis and $5,400 to pay their expenses was urged by Commissioner James C. Courtney of the Indiana Department of Revenue. It will be acted on at a two-day meeting of the State Budget Committee Friday and Saturday at Bloomington, where the committee will inspect Indiana University. “I believe if we proceed to employ competent persons to do this work, the mopey they collect.will be many times the expenditure requested,” Courtney said. R. W. Oliger, administrator of the revenue department’s Motor Fuel Tax Division, explained that the tax on diesel fuel is being evaded by persons who say they are buying it lor heating purposes but are actually using it in trucks operating on highways. He said such users owe the samq tax paid for gasoline—six cents per gallon to the state and four cents to the federal government. "In a spot survey in Decatur County we have found five violators, three service station operators without a permit and two truckers purchasing tax free,” Oliger said. Oliger said that since the legislature did not make any appropriation for administering the diesel portion of the fuel use tax law, he has assigned oil inspectors and motor fuel personnel to make inspections whenever possible. He said the division has 1,100 accounts which bring in $5 million a year. Also before the budget commit- , tee is a request from the State Pharmacy Board for $3,370 to pay . for inspection of complaints on i narcotics and other violations. Other items on the agenda ini elude: , Evansville State Hospital, $36,- ' 600 for preliminary planning on a new ward building to house 200 patients and which will cost . $700,000, and SB,OOO for rehabilitation of heating facilities. Muscatatuck State School, $3,600 : for planning to convert porches to living areas on seven buildings. 1 Adjutant General’s Office, $14,400 planning fees each to design . new armories at Bedford, Monti- . cello and North Vernon, SB,OOO to repair armories at Fort Wayne i and Portland. ; ‘ Conservation Department, 760 to operate prison work camp j at Raccoon Lake.
